Stonehill College

John Murphy, a 1969 graduate of Stonehill, isone of the most ardent supporters the Stonehill athletic departmenthas ever seen. Known as the “Mayor of Spirit” duringhis time at Stonehill, he is remembered for his contagiousenthusiasm for all sports teams at the College.

Murphy was a member of the basketball team at Stonehill and wenton to serve as Director of Intramural Athletics. It was in thisrole that he began to plant the seeds for club football at theCollege, starting with organizing a football game between Stonehilland Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire. In a certain sense, hewas one of the founding fathers of the football program here atStonehill.

Murphy served as the announcer for the varsity basketball games atStonehill, which led to his moniker of “The Voice ofStonehill.” He is a former member of the Athletic Hall ofFame Committee and continues to be a steadfast supporter of theentire athletic program at Stonehill.
