EASTON, Massachusetts (October 13, 2018) – The Stonehill College volleyball team was defeated in three-straight sets by reigning Northeast-10 Conference Champion University of New Haven Saturday afternoon in Merkert Gymnasium with set scores of 25-11, 25-18, 25-15.

For the Skyhawks (9-7, 5-3 NE10), Sophia Poveda led the team with eight kills, while seniors Allyson Hughes and Megan Pennino chipped in seven kills each. Junior libero Rachel Dunlavy recorded a team high 13 digs in the battle.

The Chargers saw its highest hitting percentage of the match in the first set, with a .417 hitting clip, as the defended the Skyhawks who saw a negative hitting percentage. Stonehill took the first point of the match, but New Haven ran with seven-straight points to take a six-point advantage, 11-5. The Skyhawks were able to close the deficit to three, 11-8, but the Chargers took game one after a 14-3 run, 25-11.

The Skyhawks fought hard during the second set, as 15 ties and six lead changes were the difference in the game. After the final tie, 18-18, New Haven scored seven-straight points to jump ahead 2-0, 25-18.

Once again, Stonehill was active in keep an advantage, but after its final lead, 8-7, New Haven climbed back up to expand its lead to 10, 25-15. The Chargers only allowed the Skyhawks to score one point at a time before taking match point.

Stonehill returns to action on Friday, October 19 as they travel to New Haven, Connecticut to face NE10 rival Southern Connecticut State University with a start time of 7:00 p.m. During the month of October, the Skyhawks will be collecting donations for the Side-Out Foundation to help fund breast cancer education and cutting edge research and treatment.
