Chargers rack up 14 team blocks, hold Stonehill to .074 hitting percentage
WEST HAVEN, Conn. (November 1, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team had its two match winning streak snapped tonight on the road, as Stonehill fell 3-1 (25-19, 25-15, 21-25, 25-23) at the University of New Haven's Charger Gymnasium in Northeast-10 play. New Haven, which entered tonight's action leading the NE-10 with 196 total blocks, utilized 14 more tonight to get past the Skyhawks.
Junior setter Emily Iverson (Elmhurt, Ill./York) led Stonehill with 37 assists and 14 digs, and senior captain Kirsten Arvidson (Andover, Mass./Andover) paced the offense with 12 kills. Sophomore outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) narrowly missed her 12th double-double of the season, recording 12 digs and nine kills.
New Haven senior middle hitter Amber Cannady (Yonkers, N.Y./Charles E. Gorton), who entered tonight's match leading the NE-10 in hitting percentage (.361) and blocks per set (1.45), posted a double-double with a match-high 11 blocks to go with 10 kills. Junior setter Kaulana Ane (Paia, Hawai'i / Kamehameha) dished out 38 assists with 13 digs and four kills, and sophomore outside hitter Kristen Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Liberty) contributed a double-double of her own with 15 digs, 13 kills and four blocks.
Leading 16-13 in the opening set, Stonehill allowed New Haven to go on a 12-3 run to end the frame, sparked by a kill from Cannady. The Chargers then took the second set as Stonehill hit -.205 and made 15 attack errors. The Skyhawks responded in the third frame, winning a back-and-forth battle, 25-21, before succumbing to New Haven in the fourth set, 25-23.
Following tonight's contest, Stonehill (14-11, 6-3 NE-10) is off until next Friday night, when the Skyhawks host Adelphi University on Black Out Merkert Night. Stonehill then remains at home for a match the very next day, as Pace University visits Merkert Gym on Senior Day. New Haven (18-4, 9-0 NE-10), which has not lost a match in Northeast-10 play since joining the league prior to the 2008 season, will put its conference streak back on the line Tuesday night, when the Chargers host Adelphi.
