Chivakos Sets School Record In Mile, Qualifies For All-New Englands As Women's Indoor Track And Field Team Excels At Boston University Valentine Classic

BOSTON, Mass.-- Make it eight more qualifiers for the upcoming New England Championships for both Stonehill indoor track and field squads, as both Chieftain teams enjoyed solid performances over the weekend at the Boston University Valentine Classic.

On the menís side, five individuals and one team qualified for the New England Championships, as junior Paul Viggiano (Trumbull, Conn.) set a school record in the 400 meters with a time of 50.42 to lead the way. Freshman Richard Gerry (Bow, N.H.) also qualified for the New Englands and set a freshman record in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.63, while sophomore Vinnie Williams (Springfield, Mass.) and senior Sotirios Pintzopoulos (North Reading, Mass.) both qualified in the 200 meters with times of 22.40 and 22.51, respectively. Freshman Keith Gill (Brockton, Mass.) completed the quintet of Chieftain male individuals to qualify for New Englands in the 1,000 meters, as he posted a time of 2:31.16.

The menís distance medley relay team of Viggiano, Gerry, Gill and senior Fran Guardabascio (Mansfield, Mass.) set a school record, qualified for the New England Championships and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in the event in posting a time of 10:03.90, as Guardasbcio ran the 1,200 meters, Viggiano followed in the 400, Gerry was next in the 800 and Gill anchored the relay in the mile.

On the womenís side, senior Dianna Chivakos (South Hamilton, Mass.) qualified for New Englands in the mile with a school record time of 5:04, while sophomore Dana DeIngenis (Cranston, R.I.) also qualified for New Englands in the 800 meters with a time of 2:20.10.

Both Stonehill squads will compete for their respective Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Championships next Friday morning when competition takes place at Southern Connecticutís Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven, Conn. beginning at 10:00 a.m.
