#42 Women's Tennis Defeats New Haven, 6-1

Hammond earned the Skyhawks deciding point with her victory at No. 3 singles after also factoring in a win at No. 2 doubles.

Hammond and Ray guide Skyhawks to 15th-straight NE10 regular season win

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (September 19, 2018) – Stonehill College, ranked No. 42 in the most recent Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II rankings, returned to Conference play and picked up a 6-1 decision over the University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference women's tennis action on the UNH Tennis Courts this afternoon.

Junior Caroline Ray and sophomore Bethany Hammond were both double-winners to lead Stonehill to its 15th-straight NE10 regular season win dating back to late in the 2016 fall season. Hammond and sophomore Isabelle Porter teamed up for a 6-1 victory at No. 2 doubles as the Skyhawks claimed the doubles point in the match with a 2-1 edge in doubles play. Hammond followed by earning the match-deciding point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over New Haven sophomore Lilia Rodriguez at No. 3 singles.

Ray combined with freshman Samantha Ormesher for Stonehill's second doubles win with a 6-1 decision at No. 3. She then cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 singles against New Haven junior Angela Mercurio.

Senior Nicole Downey and junior Alexandra Vo both battled to third-set tiebreakers for their wins to earn singles points for Stonehill. Vo rallied from a set down to defeat postgrad Laura Fermosel 3-6, 6-4, 11-9 at No. 1 singles for the Skyhawks. Downey grinded out a 6-0, 4-6, 10-6 decision at No. 4 singles against freshman Nicole Mika. Freshman Emma Markaryan also picked up a singles point for Stonehill at No. 5.

Sophomore Stephanie Gonzalez was a part of two wins for New Haven. She earned the Charger's lone point with her 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 2 singles against Ormesher. Gonzalez and Fermosel earlier combined for a 6-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles against Vo and junior Annelise Howick, the No. 9-ranked doubles team in the Oracle/ITA East Region rankings.

Stonehill (2-0, 2-0 NE10) returns to action on Sunday, when it hosts Le Moyne College, ranked No. 9 in the Oracle/ITA East Region rankings, for an NE10 match at Charles Watt Tennis Courts at noon. New Haven (1-1, 0-1 NE10) visits regionally ranked Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
