Second Half Surge Lifts Women's Lacrosse Past Franklin Pierce, 17-16

Pleshaw and Doherty lead Skyhawks with five points each 

RINDGE, N.H. (April 7, 2018) – Stonehill College wrapped a ten goal run around halftime to take control and then held on down the stretch to claim a 17-16 triumph over Franklin Pierce University in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Sodexo Field this afternoon.

Senior Brianna Doherty (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) and sophomore MacKenzie Pleshaw (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) each recorded five points to lead Stonehill to the win. Pleshaw netted a team-high four goals to go with an assist, while Doherty totaled two goals and a team-high three assists for the Skyhawks, collecting two draw controls and a ground ball. Freshman Shannon Hughes (Franklin Square, New York/Kellenberg Memorial) added three goals, a draw and two ground balls, while senior Kelly Healey (Westwood, Massachusetts/Westwood) tallied two goals and an assist, with a draw and two ground balls.

Junior Logan Snelling (Duxbury, Massachusetts/Duxbury) and freshman Olivia Pino (North Andover, Massachusetts/North Andover) each chipped in with a pair of goals for Stonehill, while Snelling added two draws and a ground ball. Freshman Emily Sharretts (Derry, New Hampshire/Pinkerton Academy) collected a team-high five draw controls and two caused turnovers for the Skyhawks. Sophomore Bailey Grant (Chelmsford, Massachusetts/Chelmsford) posted ten saves in goal for the Skyhawks, with two ground balls.

Senior Caitlin Sweeney (Shirley, New York/Longwood) totaled seven points to lead Franklin Pierce, netting four goals to go with three assists, six draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Twin sister Briana Sweeney (Shirley, New York/Longwood) added three goals and an assist for four points, with three draw controls and three ground balls. Freshman Zoe Totland (Salt Lake City, Utah/Brighton) also totaled four points with two goals and two assists, with five draws, while classmate Caroline Lounsbury (Franklin, Massachusetts/Franklin) netted three goals for the Ravens.

Senior Madison Murray (Berkley, Michigan/Berkley) posted four saves over the first 40:30 in goal for Franklin Pierce, before yielding to sophomore Casey Butera (West Milford, New Jersey/West Milford) for five stops over the final 19:30, yielding just two goals.

Franklin Pierce held a three goal lead (9-6) after a four-goal run which included a goal and assist each from both Sweeney's, capped by sophomore Morgan Riley's (Jamesville, New York/Christian Brothers Academy) sixth goal of the year, assisted by Caitlin Sweeney with 2:36 remaining in the first half. Stonehill got a goal back from the stick of Pino with 1:28 left before the break and then scored the opening nine goals of the second to open a seven goal lead (16-9) after Snelling's second goal of the game, assisted by senior Taylor Shannahan (Mendham, New Hampshire/Morris Catholic) with 18:27 to play.

Stonehill's ten goal run consumed just 13 minutes of game clock, with Pino, Snelling, Pleshaw and Doherty scoring two goals each and Doherty adding two assists as well during the stretch. Snelling knotted the score (9-9) 1:20 into the second half, assisted by Doherty, and then Healey pushed the Skyhawks in front with a free-position goal three minutes later.

Franklin Pierce wouldn't go away, scoring seven of the last eight goals of the game to pull back within one after senior Anna Wilbert's (Bohemia, New York/Connetquot) 12th goal of the season, assisted by Totland with 28-seconds left. Caitlin Sweeney posted two goals and an assist during the Ravens run, while Totland had a goal and two assists and Lounsbury netted a pair. Hughes split up the run with her sixth goal of the year for Stonehill with 13:40 remaining. Neither team was able to corral the draw following Wilbert's marker, clinching the win for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill (5-5, 4-4 NE10) is back in action on Wednesday, when it visits No. 10/19 Pace University for an NE10 matchup at 6 p.m. The Skyhawks return home next Saturday, April 14, to host No. 2/3 Adelphi University at 1 p.m. Franklin Pierce (4-6, 2-6 NE10) hosts Saint Michael's College on Wednesday at 4p.m.
