#11 Stonehill Defeats Merrimack, 18-10

Green leads Skyhawks to victory with season-high eight points

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (April 17, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked 11th in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Division II poll and fifth in the first NCAA East Regional rankings of the season released today, claimed an 18-10 victory over Merrimack College in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Martone-Mejail Field tonight.

Senior Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) led Stonehill with a season-high eight points as she netted four goals and dished out four assists to go with three ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover. Junior Kelsey Shannahan (Mendham, N.H./Morris Catholic) added a career-high six points with five goals and an assist, three ground balls, a draw control and caused turnover, while classmate Mary Lee Mahony (Yardley, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) also totaled a career-high matching and season-best six points with three goals and three assists.

Senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) contributed three goals and two assists for five points, moving within two points of 200 for her career, with eight draw controls and two caused turnovers. Senior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) chipped in with two goals and two assists for four points, adding three ground balls, a draw control and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted five saves in goal for Stonehill as the Skyhawks finished with a 36-20 advantage in shots for the match, while also claiming a 17-13 edge in draw controls and converting 13-of-14 clear attempts. Junior Inna Hedden (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) had 15 stops for Merrimack.

Senior Jenn Pino (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) led Merrimack with three goals, five ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. Freshman Katie Trahanas (Longwood, Fla./Lake Brantley) also posted three points with two goals and an assist, while junior Olivia Huie (Norwell, Mass./Norwell) finished with two goals and an assist for three points, adding three ground balls. Junior Tyler Szymanski (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) chipped in with two assists, three draw controls and two ground balls for the Warriors.

The teams traded goals over the opening four minutes before Stonehill took an early two goal cushion (3-1) after ten minutes as Sullivan set up goals by Reilly and Green. Sophomore Mia Rapolla (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) pulled a goal back for Merrimack, but the Skyhawks reeled off a five goal run to open an 8-2 lead with 13:42 remaining in the half after back to back goals by Shannahan, who also dished an assist during the run. Mahony contributed a goal and two assists for the Skyhawks during that stretch.

Merrimack scored four of the final six goals of the half to draw within four (10-6) at halftime. Huie led the Warriors with two goals and an assist over the final 12:44 of the half. Shannahan opened the second half scoring for Stonehill with a goal less than five minutes in.

Merrimack closed within four goals again (13-9) after a Trahanas marker with 15:59 to play, but Stonehill sealed the win by netting five of the last six goals from there. Mahony sparked the run with a goal less than a minute after Trahanas', while Green led the clinching stretch with a goal and two assists.

Stonehill (10-5, 9-2 NE-10) is back in action on Saturday when it hosts 10th-ranked Dowling College, ranked fourth in the East Region, for a key regional clash on Senior Day at 11 a.m. Merrimack (3-10, 2-7 NE-10) hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at noon.
