Merrimack Edges Softball, 4-3

NORTH ANDOVER, Massachusetts (April 23, 2019) – Merrimack College edged the Stonehill College softball team with a score of 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at Martone-Mejail Field in Northeast-10 Conference play.

With the loss, Stonehill is now 14-22 overall and 10-14 in NE10 play, while Merrimack is now to 20-21 overall and 11-11 in Conference play.

For the Skyhawks, Sophie Perez went 3-for-3 with two RBI and a double, as Hannah Ricker went 2-for-4 with one run scored. Also at the plate, Julia Hartman swung 1-for-4 with one run scored a double, while Michelle Theilgard  went 1-for-4 with one run scored and an RBI.

The Warriors saw two players with two hits each as Hannah Johnson went 2-for-3 with a run scored, a RBI, and a triple and Nicole Nanof went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double

Merrimack saw their biggest lead of four runs in the bottom of the first inning off of five hits. Tiffany Mangiameli singled and Johnson tripled for the first run, as Caitlin McBride doubled with one out to extend their lead to two, 2-0. Katherine Rayner struck out her second batter, but Jenna Wilke doubled for the third run and Kelly Dovi was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for a 4-0 lead. Rayner got out of a bases loaded jam with a ground out to third base.

Theilgard went 1-for-4 with one run scored and a RBI

The Warriors held the Skyhawks to one hit until the top of the fourth as Perez connected for her fourth double of the season and 16th career double bringing home Theilgard and Hartman to cut the deficit to two, 4-2. Merrimack retired the side with three-straight outs.

Stonehill closed the gap to one in the top of the seventh, 4-3, with as Ricker singled down the left field line with two outs. Genna Hartman and Theilgard also went back-to-back with singles as Ricker rounded the bases for the third run, 4-3.  Merrimack once again retired the side stranding two runners on base.
