Stonehill Drops Close Games to Nationally-Ranked Teams


Senior Chelsea Stryker continues to swing a hot bat for the Skyhawks, going 3-for-3 in game one today. 

Caldwell holds off Skyhawks, 3-1; #7 Indianapolis posts 4-0 win over Skyhawks

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (March 15, 2011) – Stonehill College returned to action following a day off and dropped a pair of tight games to nationally-ranked opponents today at the Rebel Spring Games. Caldwell College, among teams receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II poll, held off Stonehill for a 3-1 win in game one of the day, before 7th-ranked University of Indianapolis posted a 4-0 win over the Skyhawks in game two.

Caldwell College scored a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to immediately answer a Stonehill run and claim a 3-1 victory.

Senior Brittany Pulido (Ojai, Calif./Nordhoff) allowed just the one earned run on six hits with a strikeout and no walks in the complete game win for Caldwell. Junior Samantha Krantz (Hampton Bays, N.Y./Hampton Bays) took the loss for Stonehill, yielding three runs, two earned, on four hits with two strikeouts and three walks over 5.2 innings. Freshman Nicole Schneider (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascack Valley) added 1.1 innings of hitless, shutout relief for the Skyhawks.

Junior Chelsea Stryker (Baldwin, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) was 3-for-3 at the plate for Stonehill, while sophomore Kelsey Wilcox (Canterbury, Conn./Griswold) finished 1-for-3 with a home run to account for the Skyhawks scoring.

Caldwell opened the scoring in the top of the first when junior Katie Margiotta (Sewell, N.J./Washington Township) walked and later scored when classmate Marisa Tamez (Fountain Valley, Calif./Fountain Valley) reached on an error.

Stonehill tied the game in the fifth when Wilcox smacked her second home run of the season with one out. Caldwell had an immediate answer, however, regaining the lead in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Kelly Schymanski (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) singled and classmate Sierra Parker (Chino Hills, Calif./Chino Hills) walked before the two scored on a single by freshman Mariah Lucena (Belleville, N.J./Belleville).


Junior Kaitlin Andrews didn't allow an earned run over six innings, striking out a season-high seven batters in game two.
#7 Indianapolis 4, Stonehill 0

Seventh-ranked University of Indianapolis took advantage of three Stonehill College errors to score four unearned runs and claim the 4-0 victory.

Senior Meagan Gutierrez (Portage, Ind./Portage) pitched a three-hit shutout in the circle for Indianapolis, striking out four and walking three over seven innings. Stonehill got a strong start from junior Kaitlin Andrews (Hudson, Mass./Hudson), who took the loss despite not allowing an earned run. She yielded the four unearned runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over six innings.

Sophomore Courtney Marchand (Raymond, N.H./Timberlane Regional) batted 1-for-2 with a walk for Stonehill. Sophomore Nicole Eisenmann (East Bridgewater, Mass./East Bridgewater) and freshman Brianna Gunter (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) both hit 1-for-3 for the Skyhawks, with Gunter collecting her first collegiate hit.

The game was scoreless until Indianapolis took advantage of two Stonehill errors in a three-run fifth. Senior Jessica Breeden (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) reached on an error and sophomore Jennifer DeMolte (Indianapolis, Ind./Franklin Central) singled before sophomore Kelsey Rummel (Lafayette, Ind./McCutcheon) drove in the first run with a single. The next two runs scored when senior Jamie Keltz (Avon, Ind./Avon) reached on a throwing error with two out.

The Greyhounds added an insurance run in the sixth as sophomore Audrey Ernst (Bloomington, Ind./Edgewood) roped a pinch-hit double and later scored on a throwing error down to third after she advanced on a wild pitch.

Stonehill (1-5, 0-0 NE-10) are right back in action on Wednesday when they face Caldwell again at 9 a.m., before taking on the University of Minnesota-Duluth at 11 a.m. The Skyhawks are scheduled to open their home schedule with a Northeast-10 doubleheader with Saint Michael's College on Saturday, April 2, at 1 p.m.
