EASTON, Mass.-- Sophomore Kristin Mahoney (Burlington, Mass.) tossed a complete-game two hit shutout and fanned eight as UMass Lowell completed a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader from Stonehill with a 5-0 nightcap triumph in games played at Gartland Field Thursday afternoon, as the River Hawks took the opener by a 3-2 final.
Mahoney allowed only two singles in the nightcap to pick up her 10th win of the season for the visiting River Hawks (20-9, 17-5 Northeast-10), who took a 1-0 third inning lead on an RBI groundout by senior Tabitha Hebert (Lowell, Mass.) and added a pair of runs in both the fourth and seventh frames on a two-run double by sophomore Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, Mass.) and a two-run single by freshman Ashley Cook (Jamaica Plain, Mass.). UMass Lowell collected nine hits in the nightcap, while senior Nicole Pichette (Exeter, R.I.) and freshman Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) accounted for both hits in the second game setback for the host Chieftains (11-19-1, 10-11-1 Northeast-10). Freshman Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y.) took the loss on the mound in the nightcap for Stonehill, allowed six hits and three runs in four innings while striking out two.
Stonehill took a 1-0 third inning lead in the opener on a Flanagan RBI groundout, but UMass Lowell took a 2-1 fourth inning advantage on a two-run error. The Chieftains evened matters in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by freshman Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.), but the River Hawks plated the game-winner in the sixth when sophomore Vikki Guido (Winchester, Mass.) scored on a wild pitch.
Sophomore Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass.) allowed just one hit for Stonehill in the opener, but she walked nine and hit four batters while striking out four in taking the setback on the mound. Rappoli rapped out two of the Chieftains’ six hits in the first contest, while freshman Brie O’Brien (Los Angeles, Calif.) accounted for UMass Lowell’s lone hit in the opener with a lead off single in the fourth. Hebert worked five innings, allowing an earned run and fanning four to pick up her ninth win on the mound for the River Hawks, while freshman Kristina Kafka (Chicago, Ill.) recorded the final six outs for the visitors to pick up her first collegiate save.
Stonehill travels to Colchester, Vt. on Saturday afternoon to take on Saint Michael’s in a Northeast-10 doubleheader that begins at Noon, while UMass Lowell hosts American International in a Northeast-10 twinbill on Sunday afternoon in Lowell, Mass. at 1:00 p.m.
