Newman earns NE10 Player of the Week honors for the first time this season and second of his career, overall, after notching wins at No. 1 singles and doubles as Stonehill defeated Colby-Sawyer College 7-0 in its lone match of the week on Sunday. He led four double-winners for the Skyhawks, starting by combining with junior Samuel Miller, a two-time NE10 Player of the Week this season, for a 6-2 doubles win as Stonehill clinched the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep. Newman followed that up by posting a 6-2, 7-5 singles decision Colby-Sawyer senior Alex Wright.
Riano Rojas earns NE10 Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this year, after also collecting the honors on September 11. He was also a double-winner in Sunday's win over Colby-Sawyer, earning points at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles. He started by teaming up for a 6-2 doubles win with freshman Vincent Huynh. Riano Rojas followed that up by winning a three-set battle with Colby-Sawyer junior Matt Burke at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 10-7.
Newman has split his two singles matches since rejoining the Stonehill lineup this spring, while also splitting two doubles matches with Miller in the early going. Newman, an NE10 All-Rookie Team selection as a freshman, has posted a combined 26-17 record in singles and doubles play over his first two seasons. He is 10-10 in his singles matches, including 4-3 in the NE10, competing primarily at No. 2 singles as a freshman. Newman is 16-7 in doubles play, including a 4-3 NE10 mark. He twice earned NE10 Rookie of the Week honors last year, to go with his first career NE10 Player of the Week selection.
Riano Rojas has gotten his collegiate career off to a terrific start, posting a combined 10-4 record in singles and doubles play. He is 4-2 in his singles matches, including a 4-0 mark at No. 4, while posting a 6-2 doubles record with two different playing partners. He teamed up with Miller in the first semester, posting a 5-2 mark, including 2-0 at No. 2.
