Adelphi Rides Doubles Sweep Past Stonehill, 6-3

Bottom of Panthers lineup clinches key NE-10 win 

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (April 5, 2014) – Adelphi University, ranked tenth in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division II East Regional rankings, swept all three doubles matches on its way to a 6-3 decision over Stonehill College, ranked ninth in the region, in Northeast-10 Conference men's tennis action this afternoon.

Sophomore Uladzislau Litvinchuk (Brest, Belarus) and junior Chitwete Njokanmma (Lagos, Nigeria) led Adelphi's double-winners on the afternoon. Litvinchuk and sophomore Sander Brenner (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) combined for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, while Njokanmma and junior Justin Vijungco (Forest Hills, N.Y./Forest Hills) collected an 8-4 win at No. 3. Litvinchuk followed by rallying for a 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win over Stonehill junior Tom Alaimo (North Andover, Mass./Central Catholic) at No. 4 singles, while Njokanmma recorded a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over senior Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) at No. 5.

Vijungco rounded out Adelphi's double-winners with his 6-3, 6-3 win over junior Jared Drzal (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) at No. 6 singles. Junior Ryan Villarruel (Staten Island, N.Y./Saint Peter's Boys) and sophomore Sebastian Zapata (Toronto, Ontario/Northview Heights) clinched the Panthers doubles sweep with their 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.

Senior Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) earned a back and forth 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles against Brenner to lead Stonehill. Junior Eric Ringstad (Fairbanks, Alaska/Monroe Catholic) was leading 6-0, 3-0 when Villaruel retired at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Philip Klados (Lake Forest, Calif./Santa Margarita Catholic) added a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles against Zapata.  

Stonehill (9-7, 5-3 NE-10) looks to get back on track tomorrow when it visits Post University for a non-conference matchup at 1 p.m. Adelphi (7-5, 5-1 NE-10) travels to Franklin Pierce University next Friday at 10 a.m.
