Five Skyhawks Earn NE-10 Postseason Honors





Bergeron, Armstrong head postseason honors list for men's tennis with All-NE-10 accolades at both singles and doubles

EASTON, Mass. (May 6, 2011) – Five members of the Stonehill College men's tennis team have earned postseason honors from the Northeast-10 Conference for their efforts this season. The Skyhawks had two student-athletes honored for their performances this season at singles, while two doubles pairings were honored and a pair of freshmen collected All-Rookie team accolades.

Junior Aaron Bergeron (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) led the way for Stonehill by earning first team All-Northeast-10 honors at No. 4 singles while also collecting third team All-Conference accolades at No. 2 doubles along with sophomore Chris Martin (Darien, Conn./Darien). Freshman Brett Armstrong (Manville, R.I./Mount Saint Charles Academy) collects third team All-Conference honors at No. 6 singles, while he and senior Jonathan Burke (Wakefield, R.I./South Kingstown) earned second team All-NE-10 honors at No. 3 doubles. Armstrong and classmate Nick Hyzak (Guilford, Conn./Guilford) were also recognized by the NE-10 with All-Rookie team status.

Bergeron earns first team All-Northeast-10 singles honors for the second-straight year after being named at No. 6 singles as a sophomore. He posted a 19-5 overall record in singles play this season, including a 9-2 clip in NE-10 matches. Bergeron was 9-4 at No. 4 singles, but also was a perfect 5-0 while playing up in the order, including a 4-0 mark at No. 3, while also winning all three matches at No. 5.

Bergeron has posted a 40-9 (.816) career singles record in three seasons at Stonehill. He is 24-2 (.923) in NE-10 play, 12-4 all-time at No. 4 singles, 8-1 at No. 5 and 13-3 at No. 6. Bergeron has also posted an overall doubles mark of 34-15 (.694) over his career.

Bergeron and Martin have teamed up to earn All-NE-10 honors for the second-straight year after collecting third team honors at No. 3 last season. The duo combined to post an 11-5 overall record this season, including a 5-2 clip in Conference play. Bergeron and Martin were 8-4 at No. 2 doubles this year and reached the semifinal round of the B-doubles draw at the USTA/ITA East Regional during the fall.

Bergeron and Martin have posted an overall record of 23-10 (.697) over the last two seasons, including a 12-4 (.750) clip in NE-10 matches.

Armstrong earns All-Northeast-10 and All-Rookie team honors following a successful debut collegiate season for Stonehill. He posted an 11-3 overall record in his first collegiate season, including an 8-1 mark in NE-10 matches. Armstrong was 6-3 at No. 6, while going a combined 5-0 while stepping up in play, including a 4-0 clip at No. 5. He also posted a 9-6 overall mark in doubles play this season.


Armstrong and Burke teamed up to also earn All-NE-10 honors as a doubles tandem for the first time. They posted a 7-6 overall record this season, including a 5-2 clip at No. 3. It also marks the first All-Conference nod for Burke in doubles play, who was a second team All-NE-10 performer at No. 6 singles as a sophomore. He has also earned NE-10 Academic All-Conference honors as a junior, posting an overall doubles clip of 41-25 (.621) over his four year career.

Hyzak also enjoyed a strong freshmen season for Stonehill to earn a spot on the All-Rookie team. He was 19-4 overall in his first collegiate season, including a 10-1 mark in NE-10 play. Hyzak did not play over 50-percent of Conference matches at one flight to qualify for All-Conference honors, but posted a 7-3 overall record at No. 5 singles and was 9-0 when playing up in the Stonehill lineup, including a 7-0 clip at No. 4. During the fall season, he reached the quarterfinal round of the B-singles bracket at the USTA/ITA East Regional. Hyzak posted an overall doubles record of 12-10 in doubles play this season, including an 8-6 clip while teaming up with senior Tim Fayed (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) at No. 1. Hyzak was a combined 8-3 in NE-10 doubles matches.

Stonehill (13-8, 7-4 NE-10), ranked tenth in the most recent ITA East Regional rankings, earned a spot in the NE-10 Tournament this spring and advanced to the semifinal round. The Skyhawks were 9-6 in-region this season.
