Sophomore Drew Montano nearly tied the match with a header late in the second half.
Skyhawks two-match win streak halted by Panthers
EASTON, Mass. (September 21, 2013) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team was shut out today by visiting Adelphi University, 2-0, in Northeast-10 play at Skyhawk Field. With the defeat, Adelphi put an end to Stonehill's perfect start to conference play, as well as goalkeeper Adam Colella's (Wilmington, Mass./St. John's Prep) two-match shutout streak.
Adelphi senior midfielder Juan Aguiar (Caracas, Venezuela/Universidad Catolica Andres Bello) put the Panthers ahead in the 29th minute, when he scored on a feed from junior Diego Zuniga (West New York, N.J./Memorial). The goal was Aguiar's third of the season.
Zuniga factored into Adelphi's second score as well, as he set up freshman midfielder Caelan Hueber (Cincinnati, Ohio/Summit Country Day School) in the 81st minute to give the Panthers a two goal advantage. Hueber snuck the ball past Colella, who gave up two goals today after recording shutouts in each of the Skyhawks past two contests.
Down 1-0 in the 74th minute, Stonehill had its best opportunity to tie the match when sophomore forward Drew Montano (Avon, Conn./Avon) headed the ball towards the left goal post following a long throw-in from sophomore Joshua Bankert (Cuttingsville, Vt./Mill River Union). Montano made solid contact with the ball, but Adelphi goalkeeper Sergio Reyes (Kensington, Maryland/Northwood) made a diving stop as the ball curved inside the post. Reyes recorded his second shutout of the season, making four saves in the process.
Stonehill (3-3-0, 2-1-0 NE-10) will look to bounce back from today's loss on Wednesday, when it faces Bentley in an NE-10 matchup. The Skyhawks return home to take on Southern New Hampshire University a week later, on October 2nd. Adelphi (3-2-0, 2-1-0) is back on the road on Tuesday for an NE-10 contest with Le Moyne College in Syracuse, N.Y.
