EASTON, Mass. (September 5, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's soccer team fell to Bentley University, 3-2, in its Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) season opener on Wednesday evening at Skyhawk Field.
The Falcons erased a 2-1 deficit in the second half on a penalty kick goal from senior forward Brennan DaCosta (San Diego, Calif./Westview) at 50:25 and freshman midfielder Joe Avery's (Schenectady, N.Y./Mohonasen) tally off of an Andrew Fenn (Fort Collins, Colo./Rocky Mountain) rebound at 61:32 for the eventual win. Junior forward Cody Osgood (Harvard, Mass./The Bromfield School) opened up the scoring in the contest by putting home his own rebound at the 10:16 mark.
Stonehill received a pair of goals from sophomore midfielder Tyler Brondyk (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield), his first and second markers of the season.
Brondyk tied up the game at 1-1 in the 20th minute by gathering a loose ball off of his chest, sliding the ball towards the middle of the box and lofting a shot over Bentley goalkeeper Alex Pilitsis (Brunswick, Maine/North Yarmouth Academy) who came out too deep on the initial cross that Brondyk settled on the right side of the box.
At 26:42, Brondyk gave the Skyhawks their first lead in the conference season opener with a left-footed goal that clanked off of the left post and past the dive of a Falcons defender as it slowly rolled into the net. Senior midfielder Jonathan Hope (Avon, Conn./Avon) set up the goal with a crisp through ball to Brondyk on the right flank.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Colella (Wilmington, Mass./Saint John's Prep) turned away four shots, two in each half, for the Skyhawks while Pilitsis did not record a save.
Bentley outshot Stonehill, 18-11, recording exactly nine shots in each half and won the corners matchup, 6-2. Play also intensified in the second half as the Skyhawks were called for 14 fouls (20 total) while the Falcons recorded 11 fouls, five in the second stanza.
Stonehill (1-1-1, 0-1-0 NE-10) returns to action on Friday, September 7 on Skyhawk Field against Mercy College at 4 p.m. Bentley University (2-0-0, 1-0-0 NE-10), who has not lost to the Skyhawks since 2005 (5-0-2), travels to Barry University on Saturday, September 8 at 7 p.m.
