Ice Hockey Tripped Up By Franklin Pierce, 3-1

WORCESTER, Massachusetts (November 24, 2018) – The Stonehill College ice hockey team fell to Northeast-10 Conference foe Franklin Pierce University, 3-1, Saturday afternoon at the Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center in the first round of the Steve Hoar Tournament.

For Stonehill, (1-4-0, 1-3-0 NE10) Ryan Meade scored his third goal of the season and fifth career, while Connor Jewett tallied his second assist of the season and 11th of his career.  Sophomore goaltender Matthew Schoen registered 24 saves in his first appearance this season.

Both teams traded turns at possession during the first six minutes of play, as Franklin Pierce was able to capitalize on one of the turnovers at 6:05 in the first period. The Raven's Danny O'Connell received the dish from Alex Lester and Mark Indelicato in Franklin Pierce's attacking third after a Stonehill turnover at mid ice and slid it past Schoen from the left channel. Stonehill won the faceoff at 17:33 in the first frame, but Franklin Pierce's defense kept the puck in the attacking third. They quickly took control of the puck and Matthew Toombs handed the puck to Anthony Nikolopoulos at 17:46 who crashed the cage and was able to put the second goal on the board, 2-0. Both teams registered 13 shots in the first period, as the Skyhawks went 0-for-1 in power plays.

Late in the second with 6:51 left on the clock, Lester pounced on a put-back opportunity on the left side to find the cage in the lower left corner, giving Franklin Pierce the 3-0 lead going into the third. Franklin Pierce was saw its first two power plays of the game, one right at the time of the third goal, 13:09, and one at 16:40. The Skyhawks' defense fended off the Ravens for both opportunities, as Stonehill held a slight shot advantage in the second period, 12-11.

Jewett tallied his second assist of the season and 11th of his career

Franklin Pierce was called for its second penalty in the early minutes of the third frame, 2:24, but the Ravens' defense held strong for two minutes as Stonehill got off only two shots. With just 9:34 remaining on the clock Meade struck the puck as there was a mad scramble in front of the Franklin Pierce cage, finding the lower left corner of the net for his third goal of the season, cutting the deficit to two, 3-1. Stonehill would hold the shot advantage at the end of the game 38-27, as neither team was able to find the cage during the four penalties called.

Stonehill will face Becker College tomorrow, Sunday, November 25 at 1:00 p.m. in the consolation game of the Steve Hoar Tournament held at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center in Worcester, Massachusetts, hosted by the Hawks.
