Ice Hockey Tripped Up by Franklin Pierce, 4-2

Stark knocks in first two career goals


WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 17, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team was unable to get past Northeast-10 Conference foe Franklin Pierce Friday night in its first game of the series., 4-2.

Stonehill (1-2-1, 1-1-1 NE10) saw freshman Logan Stark (Newton, Massachusetts/Walpole Express - EHL) led the scoring with his first two collegiate goals, the first an unassisted tally and the second a power play goal assisted by Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, Delaware/Canterbury and Kents Hill) and Thomas Mahoney (Suffern, New York/The Taft School).

Franklin Pierce (2-3-0, 1-1-0 NE10) saw Jonathan Haun, Jonathan Busolin, James Morriessey and Nicholas Fotiu tally the goals. Matthew Toombs, David Wilcox, Fotiu, Cameron Shepardson, and Alex Lester each recorded at least one assist in the victory.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring in the first period, just 3:58 into the frame. Toombs got a touch on the puck in the neutral zone leading Haun into the attacking zone for a 2-on-1 and finishing the puck to the left upper 90 for a 1-0 advantage.

Less than three minutes later, Stonehill had the equalizer at 6:17, as Stark blocked a shot form the Ravens and took the puck down the ice slapping it inside the right post for a 1-1 tie.

With a 13-5 shot advantage in the third period for the Skyhawks, the frame end up scoreless until the Ravens scored with four seconds remaining. Wilcox picked the puck up in the neutral zone and fired it to Busolin, who ripped a shot from the right circle for a one-goal advantage, 2-1.

Franklin Pierce extended its lead to two goals at 6:39 in the third period, as Shepardson took the puck from the left side and slid the dish to Morrissey as he chipped it past the goaltender, 3-1. Stonehill responded to the goals in the 10th-minute, as Mahoney sent the puck towards the goal from the left side. Cassidy picked up the puck near the left circle and Stark was there right in time to slap a shot at the goaltender and then finding the open slot a second later, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2, on a power play opportunity.

The Ravens capitalized on a late penalty called on the Skyhawks, and with 11 seconds remaining in the power play, Franklin Pierce's Fotiu collected a rebound to put it in the back of the cage for a 4-2 final score.

Stonehill faces the Ravens for the second game of the series tomorrow, Saturday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m. at Jason Richie Ice Arena.
