Ice Hockey Holds Off Franklin Pierce, 3-1


Skyhawks capture series against Ravens

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (January 28, 2017) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team held off Franklin Pierce University, 3-1, as it completed its second three-game series this season earning points towards the playoffs, Saturday night at the Foxboro Sports Center.

Palmer recorded his fourth game giving up only one goal.

For Stonehill, (8-11-3, 5-3-0 NE10) saw three goal scorers including Conor Cassidy (Wilmington, Del./Canterbury and Kents), Connor Jewett (Berlin, N.H./NH Junior Monarchs-EHL Premier) and Evan Jacques (Norton, Mass./South Shore Kings-EJHL). Goaltender Billy Palmer (Cranston, R.I./Boston Bandits-EHL Premier) was also a key component of giving the Skyhawks' its third two-game streak in the season by saving 42 saves. 

Franklin Pierce (7-13-1, 2-7-0 NE10) saw Evan Marek tally the Raven's only goal of the game.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first period for solid possession time, as the Skyhawks' held a one-shot edge, 11-10 at the end of the frame. Cassidy got Stonehill on board early with his 10th goal of the season at 10:36 off handoffs from Nicholas Godin (New London, N.H./Tabor Academy) and Jack Hall (Shelburne, Vt./Proctor Academy). The Skyhawks weren't done, as two minutes later, at 12:17; Jewett capitalized on a faceoff and then a shot by Michael Seibold (Reading, Mass./Williston Northampton) which hit off the pipe. Jewett recorded his third goal of the season off a rebound from Seibold's shot and Brendan White's (North Reading, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) slapshot to Seibold.

In the second period, Stonehill had six minutes worth of Raven penalties and were able to capitalize at 16:29, during the last power play to extend the lead to three, 3-0. Jacques had an extra-man advantage as Christopher Page (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) and Cameron Wright (West Dummerston, Vt./Springfield Pics-USPHL Premier) registered their sixth and ninth assist, respectively, of the season. Jacques tallied his 12th goal and third power play goal of his career.

The Ravens pulled its goaltender at 18:32 in the third frame, to give it an extra man advantage. Stonehill was able to hold off Franklin Pierce's offense for most of the time, until Marek crashed the cage for his third score of the season at 18:53.

Stonehill hosts NE10 Conference foe Saint Michael's in a 7 p.m. contest at the Foxboro Sports Center Tuesday, January 31.
