Freshman goaltender William Palmer makes 43 saves for Skyhawks
FOXBORO, Mass. (October 31, 2015) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie in overtime against Endicott College, playing in its first game in program history, in non-conference action tonight at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Senior forward Willy Baker (Suffern, New York/Hill School) opened up the scoring for Stonehill at 3:58 in the first period with his first marker of the season. After classmate Brian Furey (Quincy, Massachusetts/BC High) fed a streaking Baker in Endicott's defensive zone, the senior forward beat the Gulls netminder Kevin Aldridge (Beverly Hills, Michigan/Fairbanks Ice Dogs (NAHL) with a snipe to the upper left corner of the net.
Endicott responded later in the first period when freshman forward Alex Marcinek (Byron Center, Michigan/Michigan Warriors (NAHL) scored a power play goal at the 14:20 mark, taking a pass from Thomas Daniels (St. Louis, Missouri/Portland Pirates (USPHL Premier) and burying a shot past Palmer for Endicott's first goal in program history.
The rest of the game belonged to the goaltenders as Aldridge stopped a combined 19 shots over the next two periods and overtime session. Freshman William Palmer (Cranston, Rhode Island/Bishop Hendrickson/Boston Bandits (EHL) turned away 43 shots including a game-high 17 in the third stanza and four in overtime.
Stonehill was 0-for-1 on the power play, while the Gulls cashed in on one of their five opportunities with a man advantage. The visiting team also held a 44-23 advantage in shots, including a 13-6 margin in the third period.
Stonehill (0-0-1, 0-0 NE-10) will be off until Thursday night, when the Skyhawks open their NE-10 slate against Assumption College, home at 7 p.m. Endicott (0-0-1, 0-0 ECAC Northeast) is back in action on Wednesday night, as they continue their first season in program history, opening their ECAC Northeast schedule at Nichols College.
