FOXBORO, Mass. (December 1, 2012) – The Stonehill College men's ice hockey team had its come-from-behind efforts fall just short as the Skyhawks fell to Franklin Pierce University, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference (NE-10) action on Saturday evening at the Foxboro Sports Center.
Trailing 3-0 in the third period, senior captain and forward Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Williston Northampton) scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season on the power play (5:54) on feeds from sophomore forward Stephen Balsamo (Atkinson, N.H./Brewster Academy) and senior defenseman J.J. Sabin (Milton, Mass./Tilton School).
Borges helped cut the deficit to one goal at the 16:32 mark setting up freshman forward Robbie Dorgan (Ossining, N.Y.) with his third goal of the season.
Senior forward Michael Carr (South Boston, Mass./New Hampton School) provided the game-winner at 5:05 of the third period for the Ravens with an unassisted shorthanded tally.
Franklin Pierce also received goals from senior defenseman Brendan McCarron (Andover, Mass./Central Catholic), his fourth of the season, in the second stanza and a power play marker from freshman forward Matt Batis (Lakewood, N.Y.) in the opening period at 13:10, his first-career collegiate goal.
Stonehill freshman netminder Matthew Palella (Chicago, Ill.) recorded a career-high 34 saves in his first-ever collegiate start. Franklin Pierce goaltender Dave O'Brien (Groton, Mass.) posted 56 saves including a period-high 21 in the final stanza.
The Skyhawks went 1-for-5 on the power play while the Ravens registered a 1-for-3 showing with the man-advantage.
Stonehill (4-7-0, 2-1-0 NE-10) hosts Western New England University tomorrow night in non-conference action at the Foxboro Sports Center in a makeup game originally scheduled on October 29 at 8 p.m. Franklin Pierce (4-3-0, 2-0-0 NE-10) travels to Saint Anselm College on Tuesday, December 4 for an NE-10 matchup at 4 p.m.
