Plymouth State Tops Stonehill, 5-2

Panthers win Becker Ice Breaker title behind three points from Chambers

Senior Peter Roundy scored his second goal of the season in the third period tonight.

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (November 7, 2009) - Plymouth State University posted a 5-2 victory over Stonehill College to take the championship game of the Becker College Ice Breaker Tournament at the New England Sports Center this evening.

Senior Chris Chambers (Crofton, Md.) led Plymouth with a three point night on a goal and two assists, while sophomore Bryan Kriner (Newport, R.I.) and freshman Sean Foley (Weymouth, Mass.) each posted a goal and assist. Freshman Tim Visich (Mount Pleasant, Mich.) dished two assists for the Panthers who also got goals from sophomore Chris Zaremba (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and freshman Chad Wilhelm (Plymouth, Mich.).

Senior Peter Roundy (Simsbury, Conn./Kimball Union) and sophomore Patrick Greene (Weymouth, Mass./Catholic Memorial) scored goals for Stonehill.

Freshman goaltender Jack Astedt (Angelholm, Sweden) earned the win for Plymouth State in his collegiate debut with 33 saves, 28 coming in the final two periods. Sophomore Tyler Jackson (Little Silver, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) made 29 stops (11 first period) in goal for Stonehill. Stonehill finished with a 35-34 edge in shots after Plymouth enjoyed a 13-5 advantage in a two-goal first period.

PSU jumped on top 3:36 into the contest as Foley scored off feeds from Kriner and Chambers. The Panthers doubled their lead with 1:20 left before the first intermission with Zaremba's goal, assisted by Visich and junior Sean Buckley (Sagamore, Mass.). PSU scored the lone goal of the second period with a power-play goal from Kriner, assisted by Foley and Chambers, with 6:09 left.

Stonehill, which erased third period deficits of two and three goals in earning a win and tie earlier this week, looked poised to repeat the feat again when Greene netted his first goal of the season, assisted by freshman Dana Borges (Taunton, Mass./Coyle Cassidy), on the power-play 1:47 into the third period.

Plymouth answered less than three minutes later with Wilhelm's goal, assisted by Visich and sophomore Brian Johnson (East Bridgewater, Mass.), at 4:20. Stonehill again drew within two goals with Roundy's second of the season, assisted by senior Christopher Rogers (Westford, Mass./Pomfret School) and sophomore Bill Harris (Weymouth, Mass./Weymouth) with 40-seconds to play. The Panthers answered again with an unassisted Chambers goal into an empty net with 23-seconds remaining to seal the win.

Stonehill (1-1-1, 0-0-0 NE-10) is back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Johnson & Wales University at the Foxborough Sports Center at 7 p.m. Plymouth State (2-0-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) visits Worcester State College on Tuesday, November 17, at 5:30 p.m.
