Minneapolis, Minnesota, rising senior earns spot for academic efforts for first time
EASTON, Mass. (July 18, 2019) – Stonehill College rising senior swingman Will Moreton has been recognized for his efforts in the classroom with a spot on the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2018-19 Honors Court, the organization announced.
The NABC Honors Court recognizes NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA student-athletes of basketball programs led by NABC member coaches for their work in the classroom. To be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria of being in their junior or senior year academically on the men's basketball team with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the academic year.
Moreton, a finance major with a cumulative grade point average of 3.43, earns a spot on the NABC Honors Court for the first time following his junior season. He has been named to the NE10 Academic Honor Roll each of the last five semesters, earning Academic Distinction recognition after having a semester GPA between 3.50 and 3.99 this spring. Moreton is among nine Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball student-athletes named to the Honors Court for the 2018-19 academic year.
Moreton, a two-time All-NE10 second team selection, was the lone player to start all 29 games for Stonehill this past season, having started all 85 games of his collegiate career. He led the NE10 and ranked 25th nationally in Division II with his 12 double-doubles, giving him 19 over his career, leading the Skyhawks with 18.2 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.1 steals in 34.2 minutes per game. Moreton ranked eighth among NE10 scoring leaders, second in rebounding, including a Conference-best 7.4 defensive boards per game (13th nationally) and 13th in steals. He shot 43.8-percent from the field, including 36% (67-for-186) from three-point distance, and 78.9% (90-114) from the free-throw line. Moreton had the opportunity to represent the United States as a member of the USA East Coast touring squad that competed in Greece last month.
Moreton became the program's 40th 1,000-point scorer when he netted 35 points in a win over Concordia (N.Y.) College on December 16. He enters his senior year ranked 20th in program history with 1,294 career points, while his 188 career three-pointers rank fifth all-time, having produced back-to-back 500-point seasons. Moreton has also totaled 593 rebounds, 201 assists, 92 steals and 57 blocked shots over his career. He has totaled 65 career double-figure games, including 19 games with 20-plus points and four 30-plus point games, netting a career-best 40 points in a win over Franklin Pierce University on February 16, marking the program's first 40-point game since 1998.
Stonehill wrapped up its 2018-19 season with a 14-15 record overall, including 8-13 in the NE10 to finish fifth in the Northeast Division to earn the program's 32nd NE10 Tournament appearance.
