MANCHESTER, N.H. (February 9, 2019) – Southern New Hampshire University surged to a 72-40 victory over Stonehill College in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball action at SNHU Fieldhouse this afternoon.
Junior Eamonn Joyce posted a double-double to lead a balanced Southern New Hampshire effort with 15 points and ten rebounds, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor, including 2-for-4 from three-point range. Senior Daquaise Andrews scored a team-high 16 points, with five steals, three rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots, while junior Shawn Montague added ten points, eight boards, two assists, three steals and two blocks. Senior Remo Simankevicius rounded out the double-figure scorers for the Penmen with 11 points on 5-of-7 shooting off the bench, five rebounds and three assists.
Senior Michael Boen was the only Stonehill player in double-figures, finishing with his third career double-double (all this season) with a game and career-high 27 points and 11 rebounds on 10-of-19 shooting, including 4-for-9 from three-point distance, while converting all three of his free-throws to go with three steals.
Only two other teammates made more than one field goal in the contest, with the Stonehill bench coming up scoreless on 0-for-8 shooting. Junior Will Moreton added seven points, seven boards, two assists and two steals, while senior Joel Berroa chipped in four points, two rebounds and three assists. Stonehill was held to 27.8-percent shooting (15-for-54), including 4-for-25 (16%) from beyond the arc, but outside of Boen, the Skyhawks were 5-for-35 (14.3%) from the floor, including 0-for-16 from deep.
Stonehill held a pair of early leads after an opening three-point play from Moreton and a Berroa jumper (5-3), but Southern New Hampshire seized quick control of the game with 14-straight points as the Skyhawks went scoreless for nearly nine minutes to grab a 12-point lead (17-5) after a Joyce free-throw with 12:54 remaining in the opening half. Andrews sparked the run with a three-pointer to give the Penmen the lead for good, while Simankevicius tallied four-straight points during the run.
SNHU's lead was 14 (33-19) after a three-point play by Simankevicius with 1:38 to play in the opening half, but Boen scored five of the final seven points in the half to pull Stonehill back within 11 (35-24) at the half after hitting a three-pointer with 33-seconds remaining. Boen had Stonehill back within ten (37-27) with a three-pointer 1:17 into the second half, but the Penmen reeled off a 12-4 run to grab an 18-point lead (49-31) after a Russo triple with 14:41 left.
That sparked a run of four three-pointers that helped SNHU stretch its lead to 27 (62-35) after a layup by sophomore Carlos Andrade with 8:53 to play. The Penmen would extend their lead to a game-high 34 before the game was finished as Boen had 12 of the Skyhawks 16 points over the closing 20-minutes.
