Wilde earned the program's first major award for a rookie
EASTON, Mass. (May 8, 2018) – Stonehill College baseball freshman Aidan Wilde (Milford, Massachusetts/Milford) was named Northeast-10 Rookie Hitter of the Year and highlights six All-NE10 sections for the Skyhawks, as voted on by the League's head coaches.
Wilde led the way with the program's first major award for a rookie. He was also tabbed on the NE10 All-Rookie team, along with classmates Matt Donlan (Guilford, Connecticut/Guilford) and Noah Lucier (Sandown, New Hampshire/Central Catholic). Seniors Harrison Sabo (Wilton, Connecticut/Wilton) and Michael Young (Mashpee, Massachusetts/Pope John Paul II) were selected to the NE10 All-Conference second team for their second honors, while classmate William Kelleher (Mansfield, Massachusetts/Mansfield) earned his first Conference recognition as he was placed on the third team.
Wilde finished second on the team with a .313 batting average and first on the team with a .433 on base percentage including six stolen bases. He played in 46 out of the 47 games on the schedule, with 42 of them at third base. At the plate he tallied 14 multiple hit games, where he went 50-for-160, scoring 35 runs to lead the team, and drove in 21 RBI. The freshman registered eight doubles, three triples, and three homeruns, while drawing 26 walks to lead the team.
Early in the season, Wilde was named NE10 Rookie of the Week for a .444 batting average, swinging 4-for-9, scoring three runs, and driving in three RBI down in Florida. In the NE10 the Milford, Massachusetts native is ranked eighth in on base percentage (.433), 10th in walks (26), 12th in runs scored (35), 18th in hits (50), 21st in batting average (.313), and 37th in doubles (8).
Once again, Sabo who was named to the NE10 All-Conference third team last season, led the team with a .325 batting average. Throughout the season, the senior first baseman led the league in RBI, totaling a career high 48 to bring his career total to 101. This season he combined for a career high 62 hits, 27 runs scored, four homeruns, and 14 walks.
Early in the season, Sabo saw a 10-game hitting streak, for the longest on the team, while also leading them with 21 multiple hit games and 13 multiple RBI games. The Wilton, Connecticut native played all 47 games at first base totaling only four errors with a career best 347 catches as he helped turn a career best 27 double plays for 70 in his career.
In the NE10, Sabo leads the Conference in RBI (48), is ranked 3rd in hits (62), 4th in putouts (347), 5th in double plays (27), 14th in batting average (.325), 16th in homeruns (4), and 42nd in on base percentage (.370).
Young was named NE10 Rookie of the Year and selected to the All-Rookie Team his freshman season as he collects his third recognition from the Conference earning second team honors this year. This season, he threw a career high 72.0 innings allowing 61 hits with 17 earned runs. He struck out a career high 69 batters for 8.63 strikeouts per nine innings. This year he saw his second best ERA with 2.13, as his freshman year he was just one of three pitchers with a below 1.00 ERA, averaging 0.68 earned runs for second in the League.
During a 3-2 victory over Assumption in late March, Young tossed 7.0 innings striking out a career high 12 batters. In the Skyhawks' last outing against Saint Anselm College where the team swept the Hawks with a 4-2 victory, Young tallied three strikeouts to surpass the 200 career strikeouts mark. He started in 10 games this year, making 11 appearances to match his career wins with a 5-3 record tallying one save. He also threw three complete games for a career total of four.
In the Conference the senior pitcher finished the season ranked 7th in strikeouts (69), 10th in ERA (2.13), 11th in game starts (10), and 15th in wins (5).
Kelleher, who appeared in 44 games earned his first NE10 All-Conference nod being selected on the third team. The senior assisted the team in multiple positions this year as he was predominantly an outfielder, playing 22 games in the outfield. He saw career best numbers in multiple categories, tallying 43 hits with 12 doubles, his first-career homerun, 21 RBI, 25 walks and a .283 batting average.
The senior totaled 13 multi-hit games, four multiple RBI games, and an eight-game hit streak at one point during the season. He ranks eighth in the NE10 in doubles (8), 13th in walks (25), and 45th in batting average (.285).
Out of the 47 games this season, Donlan earned his spot on the All-Rookie Team playing 35 games behind the plate. In his first year with the Skyhawks, Donlan went 26-for-111 scoring 11 runs and tallying 14 RBI for a .234 batting average. He walked 13 times with four doubles and one triple for a .333 on base percentage.
In the field, Donlan led the Conference with runners caught stealing throwing out 23 for a 40.4-percent success. He saw five passed balls with six errors in the field and a total of 256 put outs.
Lucier, the third freshman to garner All-Rookie team honors, averaged .281 at the plate this season as he played in 29 games. He went 25-for-89 with 12 runs scored and 15 RBI from two doubles and three triples. The Sandown, New Hampshire averaged a .333 on base percentage.
In the field, Lucier saw only six errors recording 43 put outs, as he played shortstop in 27 games. He also totaled eight multi-game hits and there multiple RBI games. Lucier was tabbed NE10 Rookie of the Week in the final week of regular season play as he swung .750 in four games played.
The Skyhawks concluded the 2019 season with their second series sweep of the season over Saint Anselm College for their first 20-plus win season in three years finishing with a 22-25 overall mark and a 13-14 Conference record.
