Orzechowski scored two runs scored, one RBI, and 4 stolen bases in doubleheader
Vargas recorded his first-career save, as he struck out five in 3.0 innings
MYRTLE BEACH, South Carolina (February 22, 2019) – The Stonehill College baseball team won its second-straight game with a 6-3 win over Dominican (N.Y.) College and fell to LIU Post, 5-3, in its first doubleheader of the season, Friday night at the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge.
Game 1: Stonehill 6 – Dominican 3
In the top of the second inning, Stonehill got off to its second 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning against the Chargers. The Skyhawks' Patrick Downey reached on a fielder's choice and later advanced to second on an error by the second basemen to get in scoring position for Jeremiah Vargas' single to left field to get ahead early, 1-0.
The Skyhawks were able to stay ahead through the fourth and fifth innings, scoring three runs off of three hits including two doubles from William Kelleher. Kelleher scored the second run of the game after doubling to left field and scoring off a fielder's choice from Downey. In the fifth, Matthew Rocco reached on a fielding error and made his way around the bases, as Harrison Sabo drove him home on a sacrifice fly. Then Kelleher saw his second double of the season to bring home John Orzechowski who reached on his first walk of the season, 4-0.
The Chargers were able to fight back, cutting the deficit to one, 4-3, off of three hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Stonehill was able to tally two more runs, one in the seventh and one in the ninth to extend its lead to three, 4-3. Vargas went to the mound for the final three innings, holding off the Chargers and earning his first-career save striking out five.
Game 2: Stonehill 3 – LIU Post 5
Hodgkins went 1-for-4 at the plate, scoring one run for the Skyhawks
The Pioneers immediately kicked off the game leaving three on base, as the Skyhawks took on an early 1-0 lead as Orzechowski ran home on a throwing error by the shortstop after singling through the left side to get on for Stonehill. The Skyhawks picked up another run in the bottom of the third inning as Ryan Abel sent a high fly ball just foul for a sacrifice fly that drove home Ryan Hodgkins for a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Connor Williams held the Pioneers to no runs and no hits in 3.2 innings pitched, but LIU Post was able to knot the game at two, 2-2 with a one-out triple and a single through the left side in the top of the fifth inning. The Pioneers continued to battle after LIU Post scored three runs off of three hits including a fielder's choice and a single up the middle that brought home two runs, 5-2.
PJ McDonald led off the bottom of the eighth by getting on base after being hit by a pitch. Sabo drove him home with a single to left field, cutting the deficit to two, 5-3. LIU Post stranded one on base in the top of the ninth, as Stonehill saw a single in the bottom of the frame, also stranding one on base to complete the game.
The Skyhawks continue its opening weekend with an 11:00 a.m. game against Molloy College in the Ripken Experience Northeast Challenge.
