NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- Senior Tom Aldrich (New Canaan, Conn.) rapped out three hits and drove in the go-ahead runs to lead Stonehill to a 7-5 opening game victory and a split of a Northeast-10 Conference baseball doubleheader with Southern Connecticut on Saturday afternoon at Owls Ballpark, as the Owls took the nightcap by an 11-2 final.

The visiting Skyhawks (15-19-1, 7-13-1 Northeast-10) jumped out to a 4-0 fifth inning lead in the opener on an RBI single by senior Blake Marston (Concord, N.H.) in the second, a two-run double by sophomore Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) in the fourth and an RBI single by senior Adam Pardo (Hanover, Mass.) in the top of the fifth. Southern Connecticut (14-24, 10-10 Northeast-10) evened matters with four unearned runs in the bottom of that frame, two of which came courtesy of a two-run double off the bat of senior Nick Czekaj (Branford, Conn.), but Stonehill took the lead for good with a pair in the sixth on Aldrich's two-run single. The Owls closed back to within one on sophomore Michael Diaz's (Monroe, Conn.) double, but the Skyhawks added an insurance tally in the eighth on Pardo's second RBI single of the contest that plated Aldrich.

Marston joined Aldrich with three hits in the win for Stonehill, which also received two hits each off the bats of Pardo, Weber, senior Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) and junior David Fradette (Goffstown, N.H.) as part of a 16-hit attack. Junior Mat Lindenmayer (Penfield, N.Y.) allowed one earned run in 5 2/3 innings of work to improve to 4-2 on the mound for the Skyhawks, while senior Matt Vaughn (Bow, N.H.) pitched a scoreless ninth to record his third save. Diaz had three hits in the opening game setback for Southern Connecticut, while senior Sean Morgan (Maynard, Mass.) added a pair of hits for the Owls, as senior Josh Terletcky (Plainfield, Conn.) took the loss on the mound.

The hosts jumped out to a 4-0 first inning lead in the nightcap on RBI singles by Moran, senior Jose Ortiz (Waterbury, Conn.) and junior Billy Hite (Shelton, Conn.), and after Stonehill closed back to within two with a pair of runs in the second on an RBI single by sophomore Javier Guzman (San Juan, P.R.) followed by a run-scoring double off the bat of freshman Brenden Shepard (Boxford, Mass.), Southern Connecticut added a run in the fifth on a passed ball and tacked on four insurance tallies in the eighth on a pair of two-run doubles by Ortiz and junior Joe Kahlden (Norwalk, Conn.) to close out the scoring.

Ortiz and sophomore Kevin Bowermen (West Haven, Conn.) each had three hits in the nightcap triumph for Southern Connecticut, as freshman Edward Bethke (Branford, Conn.) scattered eight hits and fanned five in going the distance on the mound for the Owls to improve to 5-3 on the season. Pardo, Marston and Guzman each had two hits in the setback for Stonehill, as sophomore Pat Tobin (Centerville, Mass.) suffered the setback on the mound for the Skyhawks.

Stonehill and Southern Connecticut close out their three-game Northeast-10 weekend set on Sunday afternoon at Gorman Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
