January 17, 1998 - Stonehill Men's Basketball's 10-game winning streak was snapped by Bentley College in an 83-79 loss.  In defeat however, Shaun Fein claimed the College's record after connecting on nine 3-pointers. 


Women's Lacrosse

Fourth-ranked Stonehill remained unbeaten by posting four victories last week, as Head Coach Michael Daly's Skyhawks extended their Northeast-10 Conference winning streak to 61 straight with a pair of league triumphs over Merrimack (20-8) and Franklin Pierce (23-0) that sandwiched non-league road victories over New Haven (15-10) and Molloy (14-8).  Junior All-America Kristin Darrell (West Islip, N.Y.) netted 15 goals and five assists for 20 points on the week, including a school record tying nine goal performance against Merrimack, while sophomore Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J.) chipped in with 14 goals and a pair of assists for 16 points.  Senior Tracey Hoffman (Nashua, N.H.), sophomores Mary Maloney (Great River, N.Y.) and Michelle Salmon (East Islip, N.Y.) along with freshman Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y.) also recorded double-digit point totals on the week for Stonehill, as Maloney tied the school single match record with six assists in the triumph over Franklin Pierce.  Junior Amanda McGeachey (Saco, Maine) recorded a 6.50 goals against average in the four outings for the Skyhawks and collected her first collegiate shutout (the sixth in program history) along the way.  Stonehill takes a 7-0 overall mark and a 3-0 Northeast-10 slate into a league clash on Wednesday evening with rival Bentley at W.B. Mason Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Men's Tennis

Make it nine straight victories for Stonehill after four impressive Northeast-10 Conference dual-match triumphs last week, as Head Coach Peter Miller's Skyhawks reached double-digits in the win column for the second straight year and for the third time in four seasons by notching league victories over Southern New Hampshire (9-0), Franklin Pierce (9-0), Saint Michael's (8-1) and Pace (9-0).  Senior Matt Grabala (Bristol, Conn.) was one of four players to post a perfect 8-0 combined mark on the week for Stonehill, as he was joined by sophomores Jason Allegretti (Lincoln, R.I.) and Will Herchel (Hampden, Mass.) along with freshman Mike Mashkevich (Framingham, Mass.) in accomplishing that feat.  Freshman Mike Leone (Cataumet, Mass.) notched a 7-1 combined mark on the week for the Skyhawks, whose current winning streak ranks as the second longest such skein in school history.  Stonehill takes a 10-1 overall mark and a 6-0 Northeast-10 slate into a showdown for first place in the league standings on Wednesday afternoon when the Skyhawks entertain Assumption in a conference dual-match on the Stonehill Courts beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT, as the Greyhounds bring a 108-match Northeast-10 winning streak into the contest.

Stonehill captured its second IHSA Zone 1, Region 4 championship in the last three years on Saturday afternoon, as Head Coach Sara DelVecchio's Skyhawks took high point champion honors at the Bridgewater State Horse Show in Danvers, Mass. to best both Wheaton and UMass Dartmouth in the final standings for the regional crown.  Sophomore Jamie Marsalise (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) finished first in the open fences and second in the open flat on the day for Stonehill, which also received first place performances from sophomores Becca Clifford (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Naomi Crilley (Mountain Top, Pa.) in the novice flat and walk trot, respectively.  Freshman Megan Martinez (New York, N.Y.) and Kelli-Ann Monroe (Swanzey, N.H.) also recorded second place finishes in the novice fences and novice flat, respectively, for the Skyhawks, as Clifford and senior Heather Marban (Ridgefield, Conn.) also shined during individual IHSA Regional competition on Sunday afternoon in Boxford, Mass. in the novice fences and intermediate flat.  Marsalise won a ride off for reserve champion honors in the Cacchione Cup standings given to the top individual rider in the region as well for Stonehill, which will compete in the IHSA Zone Championships on Saturday morning at Mount Holyoke for a spot in next month's IHSA National Championships that will be hosted in Springfield, Mass.

Women's Tennis

Allison Bleakney

Stonehill improved to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play by winning a pair of league dual-matches last week, as Head Coach Pam Arpe's Skyhawks notched an 8-1 victory over Franklin Pierce as well as a 7-2 triumph over Pace on the Stonehill Courts.  Junior Allison Bleakney (Lewiston, Maine) posted a perfect 6-0 combined mark in both singles and doubles play on the week for Stonehill, which also dropped a 6-3 Northeast-10 decision to league leading Saint Michael's over the weekend.  Freshman Lauren Rowinski (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) won five out of six combined matches as well for the Skyhawks, who also received four victories from fellow freshman Samantha Dircks (Stony Brook, N.Y.).  Stonehill will head to Worcester, Mass. on Wednesday afternoon for a Northeast-10 dual-match with Assumption that begins at 3:30 p.m. EDT before returning home on Thursday to take on Bryant in a re-match of last year's conference championship match on the Stonehill Courts at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

Outdoor Track & Field

Both Stonehill squads posted top eight performances on Saturday afternoon at the Southern Connecticut Invitational in New Haven, Conn., as Head Coach Karen Boen's Skyhawk men finished as runner-up to the host Owls while the women's team placed eighth in team competition won by Boston College.  Sophomore Torrey Price (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) and senior Vinnie Williams (Springfield, Mass.) took top honors in the men's 100 and 200 meters, respectively, for Stonehill, while senior Dana Burbank (North Andover, Mass.) placed second in the high jump and third in the 110 meter hurdles on the day.  On the women's side, senior Dana DeIngenis (Cranston, R.I.) captured first place in the 1,500 meters for the Skyhawks, who also received fourth place performances from sophomore Jenny Gardynski (Everett, Mass.), senior Colleen Burbank (Dedham, Mass.) and freshman Meghan Rocha (Nashua, N.H.) in the 5,000 meters, triple jump and discus, respectively.  Both Stonehill squads will be in action at three different venues this weekend, competing individually at both the Princeton Howell Invitational and University of Texas Relays and in team competition at the Bryant Invitational in Smithfield, R.I. on Saturday morning beginning at 10:00 a.m. EDT.

Yesenia Marrero

Sophomore Yesenia Marrero (Brockton, Mass.) rapped out four hits and drove in three runs to lift Stonehill to a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from Pace on Sunday afternoon by scores of 2-0 in the opener and 4-1 in the nightcap in games played at Pace Field in Briarcliff, N.Y.  Marrero belted a two-run game-winning homer in the second game triumph for Head Coach Danielle Delude's Skyhawks that also featured a solo shot off the bat of junior Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.), while junior Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.) and sophomore Kate Brides (West Bridgewater, Mass.) also chipped in with three hits in the twinbill sweep for the visitors.  Freshman Kait Mendall (Middleboro, Mass.) tossed a three-hitter and struck out two to record her first collegiate victory and shutout in the opener for Stonehill, while sophomore Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.) also went the distance in scattering six hits to pick up her second win of the spring on the mound for the Skyhawks.  Stonehill, 3-11 overall and 2-2 in Northeast-10 play, travels to North Andover, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon for a Northeast-10 doubleheader with Merrimack that begins at 3:00 p.m. EDT.

Blake Marston

Senior Blake Marston's (Concord, N.H.) two-out, two-run pinch-hit single delivered the winning runs and lifted Stonehill to a 3-1 nightcap victory and a split of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with Merrimack on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field in North Andover, Mass.  Head Coach Patrick Boen's Skyhawks also received a pinch-hit RBI single from senior Max Vigliotti (Stamford, Conn.) that set up Marston's heroics, as senior Chris Herrmann (Chelmsford, Mass.) went the distance on the mound in scattering seven hits and striking out eight to pick up the victory.  Marston also recorded a save in two scoreless innings of relief last Wednesday in a 7-5 Stonehill triumph over UMass Lowell at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass., as senior Matt Vaughn (Bow, N.H.), sophomore Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.) and freshman Brendan Shepard (Boxford, Mass.) each recorded a pair of hits in a contest that also featured a home run off the bat of junior David Fradette (Goffstown, N.H.).  The Skyhawks, 8-13 overall and 2-7 in Northeast-10 play, head to Springfield, Mass. on Tuesday afternoon to take on American International in a Northeast-10 outing that begins at 3:30 p.m. EDT.
