April 12, 2006 - The Stonehill Women's Tennis team claimed their first outright Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season Championship in 14 years.  This honor, the College's fourth overall, came after the ladies swept a 9-0 dual-match decision from Southern New Hampshire in Manchester, N.H.


Women's Lacrosse

Kristin Darrell

Junior All-America Kristin Darrell (West Islip, N.Y.) scored five goals, including the game-winner with 16 seconds remaining in the sudden death third overtime, to lift fourth-ranked Stonehill to a 12-11 non-league victory over third-ranked and defending NCAA national champion Adelphi last Saturday afternoon at Stiles Field in Garden City, N.Y.  Darrell's heroics came just moments after fellow junior Amanda McGeachey (Saco, Maine) saved a potential game-winning shot by the Panthers for Head Coach Michael Daly's Skyhawks, who overcame a four-goal second half deficit to post the dramatic triumph.  Sophomore Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J.) added a hat trick and an assist in the win for Stonehill, which also received a pair of goals and two assists off the stick of senior Tracey Hoffman (Nashua, N.H.).  Kelly finished with 10 goals and seven assists for 17 points in three Skyhawk victories on the week, including five goals and two assists in a 19-5 win over St. Thomas Aquinas last Thursday evening at Torne Valley Stadium in Suffern, N.Y., while Hoffman collected eight goals and eight assists for 16 points, including five goals and an assist in a 19-9 Northeast-10 Conference triumph over Bryant last Tuesday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium, Stonehill's 63rd straight league victory dating back to April 2000.  McGeachey recorded a 7.95 goals against average and a .528 saves percentage in the three matches for the Skyhawks, who take an 11-0 overall mark and a 5-0 Northeast-10 slate into a conference outing with Assumption on Thursday evening in Worcester, Mass. that begins at 7:00 p.m. EDT.

Softball

Courtney Young

Sophomore Courtney Young (Danvers, Mass.) belted a pair of homers and drove in three runs to lift Stonehill to a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from Franklin Pierce last Saturday afternoon by scores of 8-0 in the opener and 3-0 in the nightcap in games played at Gartland Field.  Sophomore Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.) tossed a three-hit complete-game shutout and helped her own cause with a three-run homer in the opening game triumph for Head Coach Danielle Delude's Skyhawks, while junior Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) went the distance in tossing a complete-game four-hit shutout in the nightcap win for Stonehill, which also received two hits and a pair of RBI off the bat of junior Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.).  Mottau and freshman Kait Mendall (Middleboro, Mass.) collected back-to-back shutouts on the mound for the Skyhawks in a Northeast-10 doubleheader sweep of Assumption last Monday afternoon in Worcester, Mass., as Mendall allowed three hits and struck out a career-high seven in a 1-0 opening game triumph while Mottau carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of the nightcap, setting for a one-hitter in a 16-0 victory that featured four RBI off the bat of Ippolito as well as four hits by sophomore Kate Brides (West Bridgewater, Mass.).  Stonehill, now 8-14 overall and 7-5 in Northeast-10 play, is scheduled to take on Merrimack in a Northeast-10 twinbill on Thursday afternoon in North Andover, Mass. beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Stonehill clinched second place in the final regular season Northeast-10 Conference standings with three league dual-match triumphs last week, as Head Coach Peter Miller's Skyhawks posted home wins over Merrimack (6-3) and LeMoyne (9-0) and eked out a 5-4 road victory over Bryant last Saturday afternoon in Smithfield, R.I.  Freshman Mike Mashkevich (Framingham, Mass.) posted a perfect 6-0 combined mark in both singles and doubles play on the week for Stonehill, which also received a 4-0 slate from senior Matt Grabala (Bristol, Conn.) as well as four combined victories from sophomore Will Herchel (Hampden, Mass.).  Sophomore Jason Allegretti (Lincoln, R.I.) posted a key singles win in the dual-match victory at Bryant, while junior John McGaffigan (Dedham, Mass.) and sophomore Dustin Marshall (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) also contributed with singles triumphs against Merrimack.  The Skyhawks will take a 13-4 overall mark and a 9-1 Northeast-10 slate into their final regular season match Wednesday afternoon against Saint Anselm at the Ames Sports Complex beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT.  Stonehill will be seeded second in this weekend's conference tournament and will host seventh-seeded Pace in a quarterfinal round match Thursday afternoon beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Stonehill helped its post-season position with three Northeast-10 Conference dual-match victories last week, as Head Coach Pam Arpe's Skyhawks notched a pair of 6-3 league triumphs over Assumption and Southern New Hampshire before a collecting a 5-4 win over LeMoyne last Saturday afternoon in Syracuse, N.Y.  Junior Elise Clark (Spring Lake, N.J.) earned Northeast-10 Player of the Week accolades after posting a perfect 6-0 combined mark in singles and doubles action for Stonehill, while freshmen Lauren Rowinski (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) and Samantha Dircks (Stony Brook, N.Y.) each notched a 5-1 combined slates on the week.  Junior Daniella Granato (Concord, Mass.) was a winner in singles and doubles play against Southern New Hampshire, while fellow junior Allison Bleakney (Lewiston, Maine) chipped in with a pair of triumphs against LeMoyne.  The Skyhawks will take an 11-5 overall slate and an 8-3 Northeast-10 mark into their final regular season league dual-match Wednesday afternoon against Saint Anselm in Manchester, N.H. beginning at 3:00 p.m. EDT, and Stonehill will be seeded either fourth or fifth in this weekend's Northeast-10 tournament that begins with quarterfinal action Thursday afternoon.

Stonehill completed a 3-3 week with a sweep of a non-league doubleheader from Saint Michael's last Saturday afternoon by identical 4-2 finals in games played at Gorman Field.  Sophomore Javier Guzman (San Juan, P.R.) rapped out three hits and drove in a pair of runs in the nighcap triumph for Head Coach Patrick Boen's Skyhawks, who also received a game-winning two-run double in the opener off the bat of sophomore Nate Weber (Hanson, Mass.).  Sophomore Justin Perry (Wilbraham, Mass.) and freshman Alex Harrison (Walpole, Mass.) picked up the wins on the mound in the sweep for Stonehill, which began the week with a 9-4 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Saint Rose last Monday afternoon in Amsterdam, N.Y.  Senior Adam Pardo (Hanover, Mass.) drove in three runs in that win for the Skyhawks in support of junior Mat Lindenmayer (Penfield, N.Y.), who pitched eight plus innings to pick up his third victory of the season.  Stonehill, now 13-18 overall and 5-12 in Northeast-10 play, is scheduled to host Southern New Hampshire in a league outing on Thursday afternoon at Gorman Field beginning at 3:30 p.m. EDT.

Outdoor Track & Field

Vinnie Williams

A total of 18 individuals recorded top three performances in their respective events for both Stonehill squads last Saturday at the UMass Lowell George Davis Invitational in Lowell, Mass.  Senior Vinnie Williams (Springfield, Mass.) led the way on the men's side for Head Coach Karen Boen's Skyhawks in winning the 200 meters with a time of 22.32 while placing second in the 100 meters, and he was part of the winning effort in the 4 X 100 relay (42.60) along with junior Danny Richter (Bedford, Mass.) and sophomores Torrey Price (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) and Tyler Guilmette (East Longmeadow, Mass.).  Senior Derek Hebert (Rockland, Mass.) also captured top honors in the 800 meters (1:55.91) for Stonehill, which also received seven second place individual performances on the day.  On the women's side, freshman Meghan Rocha (Nashua, N.H.) broke her own school record in the discus with a mark of 35.61 meters to finish second in the event and added another second place performance in the hammer throw (34.96 meters) for the Skyhawks, while fellow freshman Bridget DeVincent (Attleboro, Mass.) took top honors in the 5,000 meters with a time of 18:44.71.  Both Stonehill teams are set to compete this weekend at both the Princeton Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J. on Friday as well as the M.I.T. Invitational in Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday morning beginning at 10:00 a.m. EDT.

Friends Of Stonehill Athletics Golf Tournament
New Seabury Clubhouse

The Fifth Annual Friends of Stonehill Golf Tournament is set for Monday, June 25th on the Ocean Course at The Country Club of New Seabury in New Seabury, Massachusetts, with a shotgun start scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EDT.  Nicknamed "The Pebble Beach of the East", the Ocean Course offers spectacular views of Nantucket Sounds and Martha's Vineyard and was voted one of the top 50 courses in America by the ESPN Golf Guide.  The Friends of Stonehill Golf Tournament was established in 2003 to celebrate the athletic achievements of our student-athletes and to garner encouragement and financial support for their increasingly impressive athletic achievements.  Last year's event sold out, and spots in this year's field remain but are filling up quickly.  To reserve your spot in this year's event at $200 per individual or $800 per foursome, contact Associate Director of Athletics Brendan Sullivan at (508) 565-1667.
