October 23, 2005 - The Stonehill Men's Cross Country team edged out UMass-Lowell to capture their second straight Northeast-10 Conference Championship.  Sophomores Joe Ryan, Khalid Abdi and David Metzger earned first-team all-Conference honors, while head coach Karen Boen was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.

Stonehill ran its winning streak to three straight and its unbeaten string to five with a 9-1 non-league victory over Franklin Pierce on Saturday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena.  Freshman Pete Roundy (Simsbury, Conn.) netted his first career hat trick to cap a week that saw him notch five goals and five assists for 10 points for Head Coach Scott Harlow's Skyhawks, as he also tied the school single-game record by assisting on all four goals in a 4-3 ECAC Northeast home triumph over Salve Regina last Thursday evening.  Junior Anthony Zanetti (Ludlow, Mass.) notched a pair of goals and two assists in the Franklin Pierce win for Stonehill, which also received a goal and three helpers off the stick of sophomore Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) as well as three assists from junior Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine).  Curran netted four goals and five assists on the week for Stonehill, while O'Brien chipped in with a pair of markers and six assists.  Senior Josh Green (Mendon, Mass.) stopped 29 of 30 shots in the Franklin Pierce victory for the Skyhawks, who also received a 33 save effort in the win over Salve Regina from fellow senior Matt Gorman (Southboro, Mass.), including 20 stops in the third period alone to go with a second period penalty shot save.  Stonehill, which stands at 9-10-1 overall and finished 6-8-1 in ECAC Northeast play, has gone 8-3-1 in its last 12 games dating back to December 6th, and the Skyhawks return to action on Tuesday evening by heading to Hooksett, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire in a non-league outing that faces off at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Men's Indoor Track & Field

Two more records fell for Stonehill over the weekend at the Boston University Valentine Classic, as junior Keith Gill (Brockton, Mass.) continued his stellar season for Head Coach Karen Boen's Skyhawks by placing eighth individually as the top Division II runner in the 800 meters with a school record time of 1:52 (his third school record of the season).  Gill ran an anchor time of 4:03 in the mile in joining senior Brandon Beloin (Danielson, Conn.) and fellow juniors David Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) and Dickie Gerry (Bow, N.H.) in shattering the school mark in the distance medley relay with a time of 9:53, which also stands as the fastest time in the event in Division II nationally to date.  Sophomore Torrey Price (Sleepy Hollow, N.Y.) continues to excel in the 55 meters for Stonehill, as he placed third in a field of 113 competitors in the event with a time of 6.42 as the top Divison II entrant.  The Skyhawks will compete for the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference championship on Friday afternoon at Southern Connecticut's Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven, Conn. beginning at 4:00 p.m. EST.

Women's Indoor Track & Field

Three Stonehill individuals qualified for the upcoming New England Championships in competition on Saturday afternoon at the Boston University Valentine Classic.  Freshman Bridget DeVincent (Attleboro, Mass.) qualified in her first foray in the 5,000 meters for Head Coach Karen Boen's Skyhawks with a time of 18:13, while senior Kelly Chaisson (Walpole, Mass.) also qualified in the 3,000 meters with a time of 10:23.  Sophomore Kristina Coriarty (Brockton, Mass.) rounded out the trio to qualifiers for Stonehill in the 200 meters, as she posted a mark of 2:20.5 in the event.  The Skyhawks are set to compete for the 2007 Northeast-10 Conference Championship on Friday afternoon at Southern Connecticut's Moore Fieldhouse in New Haven, Conn. beginning at 4:00 p.m. EST.

Stonehill dropped a pair of Northeast-10 Conference road contests last week, as Head Coach David McLaughlin's Skyhawks fell by a 72-68 final in overtime to UMass Lowell last Tuesday evening at the Costello Athletic Center in Lowell, Mass. before dropping a 68-51 league decision to second-ranked Bentley in front of a national television audience on CSTV on Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass.  Freshman AJ Rudowitz (Monroe Township, N.J.) scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in the setback at UMass Lowell for Stonehill, which also received 12 points each from senior Soap Toun (Cranston, R.I.) and freshman Randall Stallworth (Toms River, N.J.).  Sophomore Nick Smith (Colonia, N.J.) netted 17 points and grabbed six boards in Saturday's setback at Bentley for the Skyhawks, who fall to 13-11 overall and 8-11 in Northeast-10 play.  Stonehill wraps up its three-game road swing on Wednesday evening when the Skyhawks head to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 match-up that tips-off at 7:30 p.m. EST.

Senior Alisha Collins (Port Chester, N.Y.) averaged 15 points in a pair of Northeast-10 Conference road setbacks for 21st-ranked Stonehill last week, as Head Coach Trisha Brown's Skyhawks dropped a 64-55 decision to UMass Lowell last Tuesday evening at the Costello Athletic Center in Lowell, Mass. before falling by a 76-49 final to Bentley on Saturday afternoon at the Dana Center in Waltham, Mass.  Collins netted 22 points in the setback at UMass Lowell, while senior Kim Morast (Bridgewater, Mass.) was also in double figures with 10 points in that contest for Stonehill.  Senior Caitlin Kennedy (Baldwin, N.Y.) and junior Daryl Cioffi (New Milford, N.J.) each netted nine points in the setback at Bentley for the Skyhawks, who also received six points, six rebounds, four assists and four steals from senior Tiffany Huggins (Stoughton, Mass.).  Stonehill, which falls to 17-7 overall and 12-7 in Northeast-10 play, concludes a three-game road swing on Wednesday evening by heading to Manchester, N.H. to take on Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 clash that begins at 5:30 p.m. EST.

2007 Friends Of Stonehill Golf Tournament

Registration is now open for the 2007 Friends of Stonehill Athletics Golf Tournament that is set for Monday, June 25th on The Ocean Course at The Country Club of New Seabury.  The fifth annual event helps garner encouragement and financial support for all of the increasingly impressive athletic achievements at Stonehill, and in four short years over $75,000 has been raised for scholarship enhancements, equipment upgrades and other athletic initiatives.  Last year's event sold out quickly, so don't be left out of a chance to play on one of the most spectacular courses in all of New England and one of the top 50 courses in the United States as rated by ESPN.  The registration fee for this year's event is $200.00 per individual ($800.00 per foursome), and sponsorship opportunities are also available.  For additional information, click on the link below or contact Associate Director of Athletics Brendan Sullivan at (508) 565-1667.

Stonehill Basketball is once again be available on-line this season, as a total of 24 Skyhawk men's and women's regular season contests will be webcast at no charge via Stretch Internet, a service of Gilbert, Ariz., over the Official Athletics web site of Stonehill College, www.stonehillskyhawks.com.  Returning for the ninth season of calling the action of Skyhawk Basketball will be Charlie Bergeron, the voice of Stonehill Basketball and Football since 1998 who will provide play-by-play, and Brian Buckley, who will once again serve as the Skyhawks' color analyst.  The next Stonehill Basketball webcasts are set for Saturday, February 17th when the Skyhawks wrap-up their regular season home slates by hosting Assumption in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader that begins at 1:30 p.m. EST.  Skyhawk Basketball is also be available via videocast for a nominal fee on the new television network of the Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast-10 TV, at www.ne10.tv.
