April 8, 1990 - Phil Lecuyer put his name in Stonehill Baseball's record book.  During a doubleheader sweep of Wentworth, Lecuyer became the all-time Stonehill hit leader when he picked up his 123rd career hit.

Stonehill closed out its first semester Northeast-10 Conference slate with a pair of victories last week, as Head Coach Trisha Brown's 18th-ranked Skyhawks notched a 66-56 league triumph over Bryant last Wednesday evening at Merkert Gymnasium before collecting an 81-64 win over Merrimack on Sunday afternoon at the Volpe Center in North Andover, Mass.  Freshman Megan Methven (Corning, N.Y.) led the way in the Bryant victory with a career-high 26 points, including a school record-tying eight three-pointers, while seniors Alisha Collins (Port Chester, N.Y.) and Caitlin Kennedy (Baldwin, N.Y.) combined for 21 points and 15 rebounds for the hosts.  Collins led five players in double figures with 22 points and nine caroms in the triumph at Merrimack, as Methven and Kennedy chipped in with 18 and 13 points, respectively.  Senior Tiffany Huggins (Stoughton, Mass.) collected 12 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals in Sunday's win for the Skyhawks, who also received 10 points and four assists form senior Kim Morast (Bridgewater, Mass.) as well as a game-high 11 rebounds from sophomore Bethany Tighe (North Easton, Mass.).  Stonehill, which stands at 10-2 overall and 6-2 in Northeast-10 play, will take a three-game winning streak into its final contest of 2006 on Wednesday afternoon when the Skyhawks head to Oakdale, N.Y. to take on Dowling in a non-league outing that begins at 2:00 p.m.

Soap Toun

Senior Soap Toun's (Cranston, R.I.) three-pointer with 9.8 seconds remaining capped a game-ending 9-2 run and lifted Stonehill to a 72-71 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Merrimack on Sunday afternoon at the Volpe Center in North Andover, Mass.  Sophomore Nick Smith (Colonia, N.J.) netted 23 points and grabbed seven rebounds in the triumph for Head Coach David McLaughlin's Skyhawks, who also received a career-high 22 points and five caroms from freshman AJ Rudowitz (Monroe Township, N.J.).  Senior Lance Clarke (Cambridge, Mass.) added 12 points, six assists and five boards on the day for Stonehill, which also received nine points and nine assists from freshman Randall Stallworth (Toms River, N.J.) in overcoming a late six-point deficit and forcing a late turnover that led to Toun's game-winning trey.  Smith, who has posted five straight 20-plus point performances for the Skyhawks, netted a career-high 29 points and grabbed nine boards in a 77-59 Northeast-10 triumph over Bryant last Wednesday evening at Merkert Gymnasium, as Clarke, Rudowitz and Toun each chipped in with 12 points in the victory for the hosts.  Stonehill, which stands at 7-3 overall and 5-3 in Northeast-10 play, will host Dominican in a non-league outing on Tuesday afternoon at Merkert Gymnasium that begins at 4:00 p.m.

Ice Hockey

John Durkin


Junior John Durkin's (Scituate, Mass.) goal 52 seconds into overtime lifted Stonehill to a key 4-3 Northeast-10 Conference victory over Franklin Pierce last Monday evening at Broadhurst Arena in Winchendon, Mass., as the triumph gave Head Coach Scott Harlow's Skyhawks sole possession of first place in the league standings heading into the semester break.  Durkin added a pair of assists to finish with a three-point performance in the win for the visitors, who also received a pair of goals off the stick of junior Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) and a single marker from junior Anthony Zanetti (Ludlow, Mass.).  Sophomore Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) assisted on three of Stonehill's four goals on the evening, while senior Matt Gorman (Southboro, Mass.) made 32 saves to pick up the win between the pipes for the Skyhawks, who finish first semester play at 3-8 overall and 2-0 in Northeast-10 play.  Stonehill will be idle until Friday, January 19th when the Skyhawks head to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State in an ECAC Northeast match-up that faces off at 5:30 p.m.

Men's Soccer Earns NE-10 Sportsmanship Award

The Stonehill men's soccer team was recognized as the recipient of the 2006 Northeast-10 Conference Men's Soccer Sportsmanship Award following this season's play.  The award is given to a league squad in each championship sport that has best exemplified the spirit of sportsmanship and generally conducted themselves with a high degree of integrity, character and class and is decided upon by a vote of each the league teams head coach, team captain and Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) representative.  Head Coach Jose Gomes's Skyhawks enjoyed their best season in seven years this fall, posting seven overall victories, including a 3-2 Northeast-10 triumph over nationally-ranked Merrimack, Stonehill's first win over a top 25 squad in three years.  Additionally, senior Joseph Sousa (Shelton, Conn.) became the second straight Skyhawk to earn all-Northeast-10 accolades for his performance this fall.

Women's Soccer Pair Earns NEWISA Honors

Stonehill junior women's soccer standouts Lauren Boyd (Sandwich, Mass.) and Alex Eckhardt (Marshfield, Mass.) each earned spots on the 2006 New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association (NEWISA) Division II all-star team released last week.  Boyd, who also earned a spot on the NSCAA Division II Northeast Regional squad, led Head Coach Rolando Lopes's Skyhawks in scoring for a second straight season with 11 goals and two assists for 24 points in earning first team all-New England honors, while Eckhardt posted a 1.21 goals against average with three wins, four ties and four shutouts to earn second team all-New England accolades.  Stonehill posted a 6-6-4 overall mark and earned its first Northeast-10 Conference playoff berth in five seasons in Lopes's second season at the helm this fall while placing three individuals on the 2006 all-conference squad.

Stonehill Basketball will once again be available on-line this season, as a total of 24 Skyhawk men's and women's regular season contests will be webcast at no charge via Stretch Internet, a service of Gilbert, Ariz., over the Official Athletics web site of Stonehill College, www.stonehillskyhawks.com.  Returning for the ninth season of calling the action of Skyhawk Basketball will be Charlie Bergeron, the voice of Stonehill Basketball and Football since 1998 who will provide play-by-play, and Brian Buckley, who will once again serve as the Skyhawks' color analyst.  The next Stonehill Basketball webcasts are set for Wednesday, January 3rd when the Skyhawks entertain Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.  Skyhawk Basketball will also be available via videocast for a nominal fee on the new television network of the Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast-10 TV.
