October 27, 2006 - Junior Ali Boulis net a pair of goals to lift the fifth ranked Skyhawks to their first ever Northeast-10 Conference Field Hockey Championship.  Boulis' two goals were apart of a 3-0 victory over Assumption.

Stonehill saw its 2006 season come to an end on Saturday afternoon when the second-seeded Skyhawks dropped a 3-1 decision to third-seeded Bentley in North Region National Quarterfinal round play of the 2006 NCAA Division II Field Hockey Championships at W.B. Mason Stadium.  Senior All-America Kelly Latendresse (Sidney, Maine) netted the lone goal of the day for Head Coach Pam Arpe's squad on assists from freshman Claire Hourihan (East Amherst, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Freeman (White River Junction, Vt.) off a penalty corner, while junior Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) made eight saves in goal in the setback for Stonehill, which ends the season at 17-5 overall.  The Skyhawks finished the season ranked fifth nationally in Division II after capturing their first-ever Northeast-10 Conference regular season championship.

Stonehill opened the 2006-2007 by splitting a pair of non-league contests last week, as Head Coach Scott Harlow's Skyhawks opened the year with a 7-3 triumph over Suffolk last Thursday evening at the Bridgewater Ice Arena before dropping a 3-2 decision to Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon in Portsmouth, R.I.  Sophomore captain Brendan O'Brien (Braintree, Mass.) netted a goal and four assists on the week for Stonehill, including a marker and two helpers in the win over Suffolk, while sophomore Paul Reissfelder (Plymouth, Mass.) also collected a goal and two assists in the victory over the Rams in his Skyhawk debut.  Senior Josh Green picked up the win in goal for Stonehill in Thursday's season-opener with an 18-save effort, as the hosts used a four-goal second period outburst to take control of the contest.  Junior assistant captain Matt Curran (Scarborough, Maine) tallies both goals in Saturday's setback at Salve Regina, as senior Matt Gorman (Southboro, Mass.) made 22 saves in net.  Stonehill takes that 1-1 mark into its ECAC Northeast opener on Monday evening when the Skyhawks host Plymouth State in a league outing at the Bridgewater Ice Arena beginning at 7:10 p.m.

Men's Basketball

Soap Toun


Senior Soap Toun (Cranston, R.I.) scored a career-high 26 points on an 8-of-12 effort from three-point range last Friday evening as Stonehill opened its 2006-2007 schedule with an 86-62 exhibition setback to Division I Rhode Island at The Ryan Center in Kingston, R.I.  Sophomore Nick Smith (Colonia, N.J.) added 14 points for Head Coach David McLaughlin's Skyhawks, who also received eight points and five rebounds from sophomore Colin Scanlon (Centreville, Va.).  Stonehill connected on 10 three-pointers in the contest and trailed by only four points early in the second half before the Rams pulled away for their triumph.  The Skyhawks officially begin the new season on Wednesday evening when Stonehill heads to Sparkill, N.Y. to take on St. Thomas Aquinas as part of the Northeast-10/East Coast Conference Challenge beginning at 7:30 p.m.  McLaughlin's squad opens its home slate next Monday, November 20th by hosting Southern New Hampshire in a Northeast-10 outing at Merkert Gymnasium that tips-off at 7:00 p.m.

Equestrian

Rachel Foster

Stonehill finished seventh of 11 teams competing on Saturday afternoon at the Boston University Intercollegiate Horse Show at Holly Hill Farm in Hanover, Mass.  Freshman Rachel Foster (Townsend, Mass.) finished first in the novice fences and second in the novice flat for Head Coach Sara DelVecchio's Skyhawks and rode off for high point individual champion honors, while senior Mary Shawn DeGaetano (South Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman Quinn Traendly (Hope Valley, R.I.) posted first place performances in the open fences and intermediate fences, respectively.  Sophomore Naomi Crilley (Mountain Top, Pa.) was second in the walk trot for Stonehill, while freshmen Megan Martinez (New York, N.Y.) and Kelsey Hill (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) also placed second in the novice fences.  The Skyhawks return to action next Sunday morning when Stonehill competes at the Boston College Intercollegiate Horse Show beginning at 9:00 a.m.

Sean Donahue
Stonehill junior punter Sean Donahue (Plymouth, N.H.) earned a spot on the 2006 Northeast-10 Conference all-conference first team last week in a vote of the league's coaches for his efforts on the field, and he was also named on Thursday to the 2006 College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District squad for his efforts in the classroom.  Donahue once again ranked among the league punting leaders for Head Coach Chris Woods's Skyhawks, averaging 38 yards on 68 attempts while placing 15 kicks inside the opponent's 20-yard line, including a career-best 63-yard boot on October 21st at Bentley.  Donahue also converted a career-high five field goal attempts, including a career-long 41-yarder on October 7th in a 24-9 win at Saint Anselm, and in the classroom he has posted a 3.38 grade point average as an Elementary Education and Mathematics double major.  Donahue is now eligible for selection to the 2006 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America national team that will be announced later this month.

Cross Country

Both Stonehill teams will compete for their respective 2006 NCAA Division II National Championships on Saturday, November 18th as part of the Division II Fall Sports Festival at the Escambia Country Equestrian Center in Pensacola, Fla.  Head Coach Karen Boen's 11th-ranked Skyhawk men will compete for the title beginning at 9:00 a.m. CST (10:00 a.m. EST), while the 20th-ranked Stonehill women begin competition at 10:15 a.m. CST (11:15 a.m. EST).  The Skyhawk women are making their seventh straight trip to the NCAA national championships and will head down the Sunshine State as NCAA Northeast Regional champions for the sixth time since 2000, while the Stonehill men finished as the runner-up in the Northeast Regional championships on November 5th and are making their fourth straight appearance in the Division II National Championships.

Stonehill Basketball will once again be available on-line this season, as a total of 24 Skyhawk men's and women's regular season contests will be webcast at no charge via Stretch Internet, a service of Gilbert, Ariz., over the Official Athletics web site of Stonehill College, www.stonehillskyhawks.com.  Returning for the ninth season of calling the action of Skyhawk Basketball will be Charlie Bergeron, the voice of Stonehill Basketball and Football since 1998 who will provide play-by-play, and Brian Buckley, who will once again serve as the Skyhawks' color analyst.  The first Stonehill Basketball webcasts of the new season take place on Wednesday, November 29th when the Skyhawks entertain UMass Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m.  Skyhawk Basketball will also be available via videocast for a nominal fee on the new television network of the Northeast-10 Conference, Northeast-10 TV.
