Aly Boulis

Stonehill vaulted back into sole possession of first place in the Northeast-10 Conference standings with three impressive performances last week, most notably a 2-0 triumph over second-ranked and rival Bentley in a showdown for the top spot in the league standings last Thursday evening at W.B. Mason Stadium.  Junior Aly Boulis (Lincoln, R.I.) tallied both goals in that contest on assists from freshman Jackie Ladino (North Dartmouth, Mass.) for Head Coach Pam Arpe's Skyhawks, who avenged an earlier setback to the Falcons back on September 14th.  Stonehill outshot Bentley by a commanding 15-2 margin on the night to win the battle for first, as that match was sandwiched by a 4-0 Northeast-10 triumph over Saint Anselm last Tuesday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium and a 3-1 league victory over Southern Connecticut on Saturday in New Haven, Conn.  Boulis netted five goals in the three wins for the Skyhawks, who also received a goal and four assists from Ladino as well as a pair of markers from junior Caitlin Gleason (New Boston, N.H.) on the week.  Junior Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) collected all three wins with a total of four saves in goal for sixth-ranked Stonehill, which takes an 11-3 overall mark and a 9-2 Northeast-10 slate into another league showdown in North Andover, Mass. on Wednesday evening when the Skyhawks face Merrimack at 7:00 p.m.

Shaun Keeley

Stonehill posted a pair of shutout triumphs last week and has now recorded its highest single-season win total in seven years, as Head Coach Jose Gomes's Skyhawks notched a 6-0 non-league victory over Bloomfield last Monday afternoon at Skyhawk Field before collecting a 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference triumph over American International last Friday evening in the first-ever night match played on campus at W.B. Mason Stadium.  Freshman Shaun Keeley (Woburn, Mass.) netted both game-winners on the week for Stonehill, including the lone tally that came on assists from senior Joseph Sousa (Shelton, Conn.) and junior Danny Gomes (Brockton, Mass.) in the 56th minute of play.  Sophomore Danny Kerl (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) picked up both wins in goal on the week for the Skyhawks, as he made three saves to record the shutout on Friday evening against American International.  Stonehill, which improves to 7-9 overall and 3-8 in Northeast-10 play, closes out its regular season home slate on Wednesday evening with league hopes still remaining, as the Skyhawks entertain Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 match at Skyhawk Field that begins at 3:30 p.m.  Stonehill closes out its 2006 regular season schedule next Saturday with a Northeast-10 outing in Lowell, Mass. against UMass Lowell that begins at 3:00 p.m.

Women's Soccer

Lauren Boyd

Junior Lauren Boyd (Sandwich, Mass.) netted her team-leading 11th goal and third game-winner of the season on Saturday afternoon to lift Stonehill to a key 1-0 Northeast-10 Conference triumph over Pace at Skyhawk Field.  The victory enabled Head Coach Rolando Lopes's Skyhawks to jump into sixth place in the league standings and close in on the program's first conference playoff spot in six years, as Boyd's marker was set up on feeds by freshman Kelly Regan (Mansfield, Mass.) and senior tri-captain Catilin Green (Bedford, N.H.).  Junior Alex Eckhardt (Marshfield, Mass.) made a pair of saves to record her sixth shutout of the season and 11th of her career in goal for Stonehill, which improves to 6-3-4 overall and 5-3-4 in Northeast-10 play with the result.  The Skyhawks close out their regular season slate with a pair of conference road matches in the Merrimack Valley this week, beginning on Tuesday evening with a trip to North Andover, Mass. to take on Merrimack at 7:00 p.m. before heading to Lowell, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to square off with UMass Lowell beginning at Noon.

Football

Chris Palmer

Second quarter fireworks nearly carried Stonehill to victory on Saturday afternoon at W.B. Mason Stadium, but visiting Bryant used a pair of second half scores to pull away with a 35-14 Northeast-10 Conference triumph before 1,800 plus in attendance.  Head Coach Chris Woods's Skyhawks made things interesting in the waning minutes of the first half, as sophomore quarterback Jon Kaloyanides (Cranston, R.I.) hooked up with fellow sophomore Chris Palmer (Santa Barbara, Calif.) on a 46-yard touchdown pass (their fifth such scoring play of the season) with 3:14 remaining in the half, and Stonehill forced and recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff that led to Kaloyanides's one-yard touchdown plunge in the final minute of the half to close the Skyhawk deficit to 21-14 at the break.  Kaloyanides finished the day with 174 passing yards to go with two scores, while Palmer and senior Vinnie Williams (Springfield, Mass.) combined for eight receptions for 137 yards.  Sophomore Jeff Cuqua (Walpole, Mass.) recorded 10 total tackles (seven solo) to lead the charge defensively for Stonehill, while junior Jabari Prince (Mendon, Mass.) recorded seven solo stops for the Skyhawks, who fall to 1-6 overall and 1-5 in Northeast-10 play.  Stonehill heads to Waltham, Mass. on Saturday afternoon to renew its longstanding rivalry with Bentley in a Northeast-10 clash that kicks off at 2:00 p.m.

David Metzger
Stonehill tuned up for next weekend's Northeast-10 Conference Championships by posting a pair of top five performances at the Williams Plansky Invitational on Saturday afternoon in Williamstown, Mass., as junior All-America David Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) led the way on the men's side for Head Coach Karen Boen's 14th-ranked Skyhawks, posting a time of 19:30 over the 6K layout to place 11th individually.  Senior co-captains Dana DeIngenis (Cranston, R.I.) and Kelly Chaisson (Walpole, Mass.) each posted times of 15:44 over the 4K women's layout to place 16th and 17th, respectively on the day for 22nd-ranked Stonehill, as the Skyhawk men placed fourth and the women placed fifth in the final team standings.  Both Stonehill squads will compete for their respective 2006 Northeast-10 crowns next Sunday, October 22nd in Smithfield, R.I. on the campus of Bryant University beginning at 10:00 a.m.  The Skyhawk men are seeking their third straight league title, while the Stonehill women look to capture the crown for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.

Volleyball

Heidi Woerner

A week that saw four matches against opponents with a collective winning percentage just shy of .650 proved to be a tough one for Stonehill, which dropped three Northeast-10 Conference decisions to Bryant (3-0), Saint Rose (3-0) and LeMoyne (3-1) while also falling in a non-league match to New Haven (3-0).  Sophomore Katherine Masson (Acushnet, Mass.) posted 35 kills on the week for Head Coach Brad Alexander's Skyhawks, while fellow sophomore Heidi Woerner (North Kingstown, R.I.) added 33 kills in the four matches, including nine in a return to her home state last Tuesday evening at Bryant.  Freshman Kristen Hordern (Swansea, Mass.) chipped in with 96 set assists on the week for Stonehill, including 36 in the four-game setback to LeMoyne, as the Skyhawks fall to 4-17 overall and 2-7 in Northeast-10 play with the decisions.  Stonehill looks to get back on the winning track Wednesday evening when the Skyhawks head to Worcester, Mass. to take on Assumption in a Northeast-10 match at 7:00 p.m.
