the Year
Riverside, R.I., native honored after capturing regional title in first collegiate season
EASTON, Mass. (November 17, 2009) - Stonehill College freshman Erin Carmone (Riverside, R.I./East Providence) has been selected as the 2009 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II East Region Women's Athlete of the Year.
Carmone earns the award after leading Stonehill to both the NCAA II
East Region and Northeast-10 Conference championships over the last
three weeks. She completed the 6-kilometer course at Franklin Park
in Dorchester in 22:16.5 to take first place at the NCAA East
Regional on November 8.
Carmone, who missed the majority of the season with an injury suffered at the Skyhawk Relays in late August before incurring a virus prior to the Pre-National Invitational, has competed in just two official events in her first collegiate season. She led Stonehill to its eighth NE-10 women's championship in her official collegiate debut by completing the 5K course in 18.23.2 to place second overall. Carmone posted the top-time at the Skyhawk Relays, Stonehill's unofficial season-opener, with an 11:38 over two miles.
Stonehill, ranked 17th in the most recent USTFCCCA Division II national poll and first in the East Region for the tenth-straight week, concludes its season at the NCAA Division II Championships, hosted by the University of Southern Indiana, in Evansville, Ind., on Saturday. The women's race will start at 1 p.m. (EST). The Stonehill men, who placed second at the regional, also earned a spot at the National and the men's race will take off at 2 p.m. (EST).
