BOSTON, Mass.-- Stonehill College earned its sixth straight trip to the NCAA Division II Womens Cross Country national championships on Sunday afternoon, but the Skyhawks saw their five-year reign as Northeast Regional champions end by a single point, as UMass Lowell bested Stonehill by a 35-36 margin to capture the 2005 crown at Franklin Park in Boston.

History repeated itself for the regional champion River Hawks, who also ended the Skyhawks five-year reign as Northeast-10 Conference champions just two weeks ago by a single point. Both Stonehill and UMass Lowell advance to participate in the 2005 NCAA Division II national championships, which will take place on Saturday, November 19th at Cal Poly-Pomona.

Senior Erin Smith (Brockton, Mass.) finished as the individual runner-up in the 6K championship race, as she posted a time of 22:57 in competition won by UMass Lowells Nicole Plante. Senior Kaitlin Buckley (North Kingstown, R.I.) and junior Dana DeIngenis (Cranston, R.I.) placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 23:04 and 23:06, while junior Kelly Chaisson (Walpole, Mass.) joined Smith, Buckley and DeIngenis in earning all-Northeast regional honors by finishing eighth with a time of 23:23. Senior Kristen Metzger (Ellington, Conn.) closed out the Stonehill scoring in just missing earning all-regional accolades, as she placed 17th with a time of 24:13.

Assumptions Caitlyn Clark and LIU-C.W. Posts Natalie Johnson qualified for the NCAA national championships as well as the top two individual performers who did not advance with their respective teams.

Stonehill has advanced to each of the last six NCAA Division II national championships, as the Skyhawks posted their best team finish in 2003 by placing 10th in the final standings. Over that time span, two individuals have earned All-America accolades under Head Coach Karen Boens tutelage: Meghann Shanahan, who earned the honor as a freshman in 2001, and Dianna Chivakos, who earned All-America honors last November.
