Women's Volleyball Comeback Falls Short Against Merrimack, 3-2

Four Skyhawks reach double-digit kills

EASTON, Mass. (October 11, 2016) – The Stonehill College women's volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Merrimack College Tuesday night at Merkert Gymnasium. The Skyhawks fell with set scores of 25-21, 21-25, 21-25, 27-25, 17-19.

Stonehill's (7-9, 2-3 NE-10) junior Katherine DeLanty (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) led the way with a team-high 17 kills, while sophomore Allyson Hughes (Modesto, Calif./Big Valley Christian) and junior Marykay Nasby (Belle Plain, Minn./Belle Plain) chipped in 16 and 15 kills, respectively. Junior Ashley Hitchcock (Warrenville, Ill./Benet Academy) also added in 10 kills and 24 digs for her fifth-career double-double. Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) recorded her 19th double-double with 55 assists and 13 digs.

Merrimack (3-16, 2-3 NE-10) had two student-athletes in double-digit kills including Catherine Flaherty with 25 and Mary Kate McCarroll with 15. Tara Suhr also chipped in with 51 assists.

Merrimack came out with a smooth start to the first set, breaking open the frame, 12-8, before Stonehill was able to knot the frame four times, 18-18. The Skyhawks did not give up as they battled through a two-point lead, closing out the first set, 25-23.

In the second set, the score would be tied seven times, 8-8, before Merrimack maintained the lead keeping the Skyhawks in a two-point deficit until the end. Merrimack was able to retire the side with a 25-21 victory knotting the games at one.

Both teams tallied its highest hitting percentage in the third set, as the Warriors averaged a .444 hittting clip and the Skyhawks registered a .324 hitting percentage. With Merrimack's highest hitting percentage, the Warriors secured the frame with a 25-21 victory, putting them up 2-1. 

The Warriors had s six-point lead, 11-5, heading into the deciding set as the Skyhawks answered with 12-8 run, but three-straight points by Merrimack finished the set, 19-17.

Stonehill heads out on the road for three-straight matches away from Merkert Gymnasium, starting with Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, October 15 at 1:00 p.m.
