Stonehill Drops Match At Bridgeport, 3-0

Skyhawks lose three straight for first time in 2013

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (October 22, 2013) – The Stonehill College volleyball team suffered its third consecutive defeat, falling tonight at the University of Bridgeport by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-10, 25-23) score in non-conference action at Hubbell Gym.

Freshman setter Taylor Stevens (Foster, R.I./Ponaganset) led Stonehill's offense, hitting .333 with 28 assists and seven digs. Senior captain Sydney Maxey (Hutto, Texas/Hutto) tallied a team-best 12 digs to go with four kills, and senior libero Jessica Frankowski (Unionville, Conn./Farmington) added ten digs. Sophomore outside hitter Delia Phillips (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown East) and junior middle blocker Mary-Kate Catton (San Diego, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) each contributed eight kills in Stonehill's three set defeat.

Bridgeport was led by sophomore outside hitter Sarah Rosa (Itajuba, Brazil/Winthrop University), who registered a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs while hitting .310. Junior setter Biljana Savic (Novi Sad, Serbia/Gimnazija Isidora Sekulic ) hit .316 with 21 assists, nine kills, two blocks, and two aces, and junior outside hitter Ying Shen (Nanjing, China/Syracuse University) hit .444 with ten kills and nine digs. Seven different Purple Knights recorded at least one block in the contest, and three players tallied three blocks.

Bridgeport hit .307 as a team in the match, including .341 in the final frame. Stonehill, which has now lost five of its last six matches, hit .132 overall.

Stonehill (12-10, 4-2 Northeast-10) will look to get back on track this Saturday, when it hosts Southern Connecticut State University in the Dig Pink! Game at Merkert Gym. Bridgeport (10-2, 7-1 East Coast Conference) returns to its ECC slate with a match at Queens College on Thursday night.
