Skyhawks Head To The Court For NCAA Round Of 16

Easton, Mass. - Following the most successful regular season in school history, the Stonehill women's tennis team continues their run into the postseason as they take on California (Pa.) in the NCAA round of 16 held in Altamonte Springs, Florida on Wednesday, May 13 at 4:00 p.m.

The Skyhawks have won a school record 21 games this season and have won 18 of their last 19 matches, with the only blemish being a 5-4 loss to Queens to end the regular season.

Stonehill avenged its earlier loss to Queens in the East Regional Final beating the Knights 5-4 in a come-from-behind victory as freshman Linsday Simmons (Wethersfield, Conn.) won at No. 6 singles 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4). The win earned the Skyhawks a matchup with the 12th ranked team in the country. California (Pa.).

The Vulcans are 22-2 on the season and haven't dropped a set since in nearly two months, the last being a 5-1 victory over Grand Valley St. on March 14.

California is led by Helena VanEysendeyk and Alina Stalina. VanEysendeyk is 17-1 at No.1 singles on the season and ranked second in the country, while Stalina is 17-2 at No. 2 singles.  The two have also combined to go 19-2 at No. 1 doubles and are riding an 11 match winning streak.

The Skyhawks meanwhile are led by the doubles combination of sophomore Lindsey Herchel (Hampden, Mass.) and freshman Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I.) who are 20-1 at No. 1 doubles this season and are riding an 18 match winning streak, the longest in school history.

In singles play freshmen Leah White (East Walpole, Mass.) and Sarah Hickey (Lee, Mass.) have stepped up their play for Stonehill this season. White is 19-3 in singles play, with most of her matches coming at No. 3 singles. Hickey, meanwhile, has spent the majority of her season at No. 5 singles and is a perfect 19-0 on the season.  The first year has yet to drop a set this season and has only been taken to a tiebreaker twice.
