White Wins "B" Draw of Wilson-ITA East Regional
White & Bacall Brooks also reach semifinals in "B" Doubles
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (September 21, 2009) - Stonehill College sophomore Leah White (Walpole, Mass./Bishop Feehan) won the women's "B" draw singles title this weekend at the Wilson-ITA East Regionals hosted by Chestnut Hill College and Philadelphia University.
White, the 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, captured the title by rallying for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Dowling College senior Diane Kobasiuk (Mastic Beach, N.Y./William Floyd) in the championship match. White reached the finals by claiming an 8-3 victory over Bryant University sophomore Katie McCabe in the semifinals. White also swept Le Moyne freshman Rebecca Black, 8-0, in the second round, defeated Queens College junior Kirby Reiss, 9-7, in the round of 16, and then Concordia College's Camilla Xavier, 8-1, in the quarterfinals.
White and sophomore Bacall Brooks (York, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) also enjoyed a long run in the "B" doubles bracket, reaching the semifinals. The pair edged Bryant's Valeria Couto-Cuervo and Irma Rodriguez-Lockwood in the quarterfinals, 9-8 (7-5), before being defeated 8-5 by Katie McCabe and Amanda Granville of Bryant in the semis.
McCabe and Granville also eliminated Stonehill's Samantha Dircks (Stony Brook, N.Y./Ward Melville) and Amy Toegemann (Narragansett, R.I./The Lincoln School) in the quarterfinals.
Stonehill returns to team play on Saturday, September 26, when it opens defense of its Northeast-10 Conference Championship against The College of Saint Rose on Charles Watt Tennis Courts at 1:30 p.m.
