Southern New Hampshire 6-6 (5-6 Northeast-10)
MANCHESTER, N.H.-- The Stonehill women's tennis team claimed its first outright Northeast-10 Conference regular season championship in 14 years (and fourth overall) on Wednesday afternoon by a sweeping a 9-0 league dual-match decision from Southern New Hampshire on the SNHU Courts.
The visiting Skyhawks tied the school single-season record for victories as well with the triumph, as Stonehill finished the regular season at 15-1 overall and a perfect 12-0 in Northeast-10 play to pick up its league crown in three seasons and its first outright conference crown since 1992, the same season that the school single-season mark for wins (15) was set.
"This team has believed it could succeed during the entire season, and the championship is a tribute to their hard work," second year Stonehill Head Coach Pam Arpe said after the match that clinched the conference title. "We have a great mix of veterans and younger players that have meshed well together, and they certainly earned this title."
Stonehill, which ended two-time defending Northeast-10 regular season champion Bryant's 35-match conference winning streak with a 5-4 victory Tuesday afternoon in Smithfield, R.I. that gave the Skyhawks the inside track to the title, claimed its 13th straight victory with the effort on Wednesday. Seniors Jennifer Arcabascio (Salem, N.H.), Ashley Todd (Weymouth, Mass.) and Anna Walsh (Dennis, Mass.), along with sophomores Elise Clark (Spring Lake, N.J.), Daniella Granato (Concord, Mass.) and Allison Bleakney (Lewiston, Maine), each collected wins in both singles and doubles play on the afternoon for Stonehill, as Walsh and Granato both finished 12-0 in regular season conference singles action, while Clark and Bleakney were both 11-1 in Northeast-10 play. Arcabascio and Granato were a perfect 12-0 at number one doubles as well for the Skyhawks.
The Skyhawks picked up their sixth sweep of the regular season and third 9-0 decision in their last four matches, as the host Penmen fall to 6-6 overall and 5-6 in Northeast-10 play with the setback.
Stonehill will be the top seed in next week's Northeast-10 Conference tournament, as the Skyhawks will face either Southern New Hampshire, Saint Anselm and Pace in league quarterfinal round action next Wednesday afternoon on the Stonehill Courts. Southern New Hampshire closes out its league regular season slate on Thursday afternoon by hosting Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 dual-match at 3:30 p.m.
