Women’s Soccer Comes Up Short Against New Haven, 2-1

Moore tallies her 11th-career goal

WEST HAVEN, Conn. (October 3, 2017) – The Stonehill College women's soccer team scored in the late minutes of a Northeast-10 Conference game against the University of New Haven, but fell 2-1 on Tuesday afternoon at Kayo Field.

For Stonehill (4-7-0, 2-5-0 NE10) Meredith Moore (Salem, Connecticut/East Lyme) scored the lone tally for the Skyhawks with less than three minutes left in the game for her 11th goal of her career and second of the season, while Madalyn Fernbach (Plainview, New York/Plainview JFK) tallied her first assist of the season. Sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlin Brown (Walpole, Massachusetts/Walpole) recorded eight saves in the loss.

New Haven's (4-5-2, 1-5-2 NE10) Emily Morello and Rachel Dempsey picked up the goals for the Chargers, as Sorcha Ni Bhraonain and Kelly Quigley recorded the assists. Goalkeeper Paige Davis registered seven saves in the game.

Both teams began the game with pressure, as neither team was able to keep the ball for a long time. However, Stonehill was able to get off the first shot of the game by Nicole Geraghty (Bridgewater, Massachusetts/Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) in the eighth minute of the game, which was ripped at the goalkeeper for her first save of the game.

New Haven responded with a series of shots in four minutes, keeping possession of the ball, making Brown dive for three of the four shots beyond the 18-yard box. The Chargers continued pressing the Skyhawks halfway through the first half with the teams' third corner kick of the game by Bhraonain, which came from the left side and found Morello in front of the near post. Morello, surrounded by defenders, was able to slide the ball past the keeper for a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute of the game. New Haven outshot Stonehill at the end of the half, 9-3.

The Chargers came out firing once again in the second half with two shots in the 48th minute back-to-back, followed by a corner kick, which resulted once again in a goal by Dempsey at 47:50, for a header and a 2-0 lead.

The Skyhawks saw two shots and two corner kicks in the 66th minute, but was denied by Davis, who held her ground in the net. Stonehill responded to New Haven's lead, as Moore capitalized on a strike by Fernbach for a successful header in the 88th minute of the game inside the six-yard box, 2-1. The Skyhawks matched the Chargers' shots in the second half, 9-9, but New Haven totaled an 18-12 shot advantage overall.

Stonehill is back in action on Saturday, October 7 as they host Southern Connecticut State University on Skyhawk Field with a kickoff at 2:00 p.m.
