Reilly fills stat sheet to lead Skyhawks to fourth win in seven days
EASTON, Mass. (March 23, 2013) – Stonehill College, ranked tenth in this week's Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches' Association (IWLCA) Division II poll, posted its fourth win over the last seven days with a commanding 15-7 victory over 13th-ranked University of New Haven in Northeast-10 Conference women's lacrosse action at Timothy J. Coughlin Memorial Field at W.B. Mason Stadium this afternoon.
Senior All-American Kelsey Reilly (Hingham, Mass./Notre Dame Academy) led the way for Stonehill as she filled the stat sheet with five points on three goals and two assists to go with a season-high ten draw controls, three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Classmate Kayla Green (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) also posted three goals and two assists for five points, while sophomore Brooke Rudden (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) notched a career-best four points with a career-high three goals and an assist.
Junior Kelsey Shannahan (Westborough, Mass./Westborough) matched her career-high with three goals, with four ground balls and a caused turnover, while senior Heather Sullivan (Andover, Mass./Andover) chipped in with a pair of markers. Sophomore Elizabeth Lane (Sandwich, Mass./Bishop Stang) also added a goal and three ground balls.
Sophomore Ashley Armstrong (Northborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) posted eight saves in goal for Stonehill as the Skyhawks finished with a 31-16 advantage for shots and held New Haven to just 1-for-5 on free-position attempts. The Skyhawks converted 13-of-14 clears, forced 14 turnovers and held a 16-8 advantage on draw controls.
Junior Kelsey Shannahan added a career-high matching three goals with four ground balls.
Senior Natalie Lieberman (Manorville, N.Y./Eastport South Manor) led New Haven with three goals and two ground balls, while junior Nicole McKee (Wantagh, N.Y./MacArthur) posted two goals, three draw controls and two ground balls. Sophomore Kathryn Campbell (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) chipped in with a goal and assist for two points, two ground balls and two draw controls.
Freshman Alyssa Gianotti (Monkton, Md./Hereford) posted five saves in the first half for New Haven, before giving way to classmate Marissa McDermott (Longmeadow, Mass./Wilbraham & Monson) for the second half, who posted six stops.
Senior Kristina Curry (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow) and Lieberman scored goals around a Reilly marker as New Haven held a 2-1 lead after six minutes. Stonehill fired off the next four goals, including two by Shannahan, to open a 5-2 lead with 10:04 remaining in the opening half. The Chargers scored two of three goals over the next two minutes to close within two goals (6-4) with 7:22 remaining.
Stonehill closed out the first half with three goals, including a man-up marker from Lane with 1:03 left, to carry a 9-4 lead into halftime. Rudden scored the first two goals of the second half for the Skyhawks for a seven goal lead (11-4) with 25 minutes to play. The teams traded goals for the majority of the half before Rudden and Green iced the game with goals in the final three minutes.
Stonehill (4-2, 3-0 NE-10) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Franklin Pierce University for a Northeast-10 matchup here at W.B. Mason Stadium at 3 p.m. New Haven (2-4, 0-1 NE-10) hosts Southern Connecticut State University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
