Craig, Defensive Player of the Year, Five Named All-Conference
Easton, Mass. - Junior Jackie Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y.) was named the Northeast-10 Defensive Player of the Year and was one of five Stonehill lacrosse players named All-Conference by the Northeast-10 in a release on Thursday.
Craig spearheads a Skyhawk defense which holds opponents to only 8.33 goals per game, good for second-best in the Northeast-10 and eighth in the nation. The Stonehill defense is also averaging 13.93 caused turnovers per game and is first in the country in draw controls per game with 19.00. The two-time First-Team All-American currently has 33 groundballs, and is first on the team with 25 caused turnovers and her 38 draw controls are good for second. Craig was also named to the NE-10 All-Conference First Team for the second straight season.
In addition to Craig, seniors Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J.) and Mary Maloney (Great River, N.Y.) were also first-team selections. Junior Liza Gross (Loudonville, N.Y.) and senior goalie Justine Ferland (Portsmouth, N.H.) were named to the second-team while freshman Leyla Kuz-Dworzak (Norwalk, Conn.) made the All-Rookie Team.
Kelly leads the team with 90 points on 56 goals and a career high 34 assists. The three-time First-Team All-Conference selection is second on the team with 35 ground balls and third with 31 caused turnovers. With her four goals against C.W. Post the two-time All-American set a new school record for points in a career with 327. Earlier this season she also set the single game assist mark with eight helpers against Southern Conn. St.
Maloney is second on the team with 49 goals and third with 14 assists for a career high 63 points this season. She leads the team with four game winning goals on the season and had a career high nine points (7 G, 2A) in a 23-8 victory over Bentley earlier this season.
Gross has done a bit of everything for the Skyhawks this season, ranking third on the team in goals (42), second in assists (16), first in ground balls (29), first in draw controls (53) and second in caused turnovers (23). A Second-Team All-America selection a year ago, Gross matched a career high with eight points (6G, 2A) in an 18-13 win over Merrimack earlier this season
Ferland has started every game in goal for Stonehill this season, recording a10-5 record. She is first in the Northeast-10 and sixth in the nation with an 8.68 goals against average and second in the conference in with a .468 save percentage.
Kuz-Dworzak is fourth on the team in scoring with 28 points, scoring 22 goals and dishing out six assists. She has started 11 games for the Skyhawks this season and in the first game of her collegiate career she scored a career high six goals.
Stonehilll returns to action on Saturday when they take on Southern New Hampshire at 3:30 p.m. in the Northeast-10 semifinals at the University of New Haven.
