Four Skyhawks Named To IWCLA All-Region Team
Easton, Mass. - Following the Skyhawks 10-6 campaign and NE-10 Co-Championship four Stonehill players were named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association North All-Region Team as announced by the IWLCA on Friday.
Seniors Michelle Kelly (Mendham, N.J.) and Mary Maloney (Great River, N.Y.) and junior Jackie Craig (Rocky Point, N.Y.) were named to the first team while sophomore Devin O'Leary (Framingham, Mass.) was a member of the second team.
Kelly, a three time NE-10 First-Team All-Conference Selection, led the team in both goals (56) and assists (34) in 2009. The senior co-captain reached the 90 point plateau for the third time in four seasons, a total which no other Stonehill player has achieved more once. Her 90 points also gave her 327 for her career, breaking the school record of 326 points set in 2003 by current head coach Katie Lambert-Conover. Kelly was also third on the team in groundballs (37), draw controls (32) and caused turnovers (21). In the Skyhawks second game of the year, she set the single game assist record with eight, helping Stonehill to a 26-4 drubbing of Southern Conn.
Maloney had a banner season for the Skyhawks, setting a career high with 51 goals while dishing out 14 assists for 65 total points. The senior attack scored five goals four times during the season and set a career high with seven in a 23-8 win over Bentley. She also picked up 23 draw controls and 13 groundballs on the season, earning First-Team All-Conference honors.
Craig, the 2009 NE-10 Defensive Player of the Year, spearheaded a defense which led the NE-10 in goals allowed per game this season, and was fifth in the nation (8.50 per game). The junior had a goal and an assist on the season and led Stonehill in caused turnovers (27). She was also second on the team in both draw controls (41) and groundballs (37) while turning the ball over just eight times on her way to earning First-Team All-Conference honors. In a match-up against NE-10 champion New Haven, Craig set season highs with six ground balls and six caused turnovers.
O'Leary was a constant in the midfield for the Skyhawks in 2009. The sophomore scored twice and dished out eight assists while also making her presence felt on the defense. She caused 19 turnovers, picked up 24 groundballs and 17 draw controls while turning the ball over just eight times. Against Franklin Pierce she dished out a career high three assists and also had four groundballs and three caused turnovers in a win over Bentley.
