Garden City, N.Y. - A 14-2 second half run broke open a back and forth game and No. 7 Stonehill picked up a 67-55 non-conference  win over Adelphi on Monday evening following their first game in 13 days at the Athletic and Recreation Center.

Sophomore Kristen McWhirter (Melvin Village, N.H.) had a game-high 17 points, five rebounds and five assists while Kelsey Simonds (Middleboro, Mass.) finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for her third straight double-double.

After racing out to a 15-5 lead, the Skyhawks began to show the rust that comes with an extended layoff following semester exams. With freshman reserve Theresa Foley and senior Serita Lee doing most of the work on the interior for the Panthers, Adelphi managed to even the game at 30-30 heading into halftime.

Things finally began to swing in Stonehill's favor during a stretch in the second half where they employed a 2-3 zone and held the Panthers scoreless for 3:18, forced three turnovers and watched as Adelphi went 0-for-4 from behind the arc.

The Skyhawks, who outscored the Panthers 37-26 in the second half, shot 54 percent in the final 20 minutes while holding Adelphi to 36 percent from the field in the second stanza and 37 percent for the entire contest.

In addition to Simonds and McWhirter, sophomore Emily Rousseau (Biddeford, Maine) had 12 points and six assists while Bethany Tighe (North Easton, Mass.) had 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Foley paced the Panthers with 15 points off the bench and Lee added 14 points and eight rebounds.

Stonehill is now looking at another extended break. The Skyhawks don't return to the hardwood until next Wednesday when they host Dominican in a non-conference affair on New Year's Eve at 2 p.m.
