Thomas Named NE-10 Field Athlete & Freshman of the Week
Brookline, Mass., native earns weekly honors following his third-straight collegiate meet
EASTON, Mass. (February 2, 2010) - Stonehill College newcomer Corey Thomas (Brookline, Mass./BC High) has earned Northeast-10 Men's Field Athlete and Freshman of the Week honors for indoor track & field by the Conference office today.
Thomas, who has earned NE-10 Track Freshman of the Week honors twice this season, earns field honors for the first time and has now collected NE-10 weekly honors following each of the three collegiate indoor meets in which he has competed this season. He highlighted Stonehill's sixth-place finish (out of 18 teams) at Friday's Reebok Boston Indoor Collegiate Games by winning the high jump with a program-record and NCAA Division II Championship automatic qualifying jump of 7'1" (2.16m). The leap is the highest in the high jump in all of Division II this season (tied for 17th-best in all of collegiate indoor events, including Divisions I & III) as Thomas became the first field athlete in Stonehill history to qualify for Nationals which will be held in Albuquerque, N.M., March 12-13. He eclipsed his previous school record of 6'9.5" set at the Wheaton Invitational the week before.
Thomas also bettered his school-record and NCAA Championship provisional qualifying time in the 55-meter high hurdles with a run of 7.66-seconds in the preliminary round on Friday night. He would later finish third in the finals with a time of 7.74. His previous best in this event was a winning time of 7.67 at the Wheaton Invitational the week before. Thomas was also part of Stonehill's 4x400-meter relay team that placed ninth with a time of 3:33.34 on Friday.
Thomas has won the high jump now in two events (Reebok & Wheaton) to go with two victories in the 55-meter hurdles (Jay Carisella Invite & Wheaton) through three events in his collegiate career.
Stonehill is back in action this Saturday when it competes at the Tufts University Stampede at the Gantcher Family Sports & Convocation Center.
