CLERMONT, Florida (March 9, 2019) – The Stonehill College softball team was shutout by the University of Bridgeport (2-7), 7-0, but recorded their first shutout of the season, 1-0, against Molloy College (1-6) on Saturday, March 9 to wrap up their week of games during spring break.
Game 1: Stonehill 0 – Bridgeport 7
Bridgeport opened the game with a run in the top of the first, as Allison Luzzi was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With runners on first and second, Kaira Ramon grounded out to advance the runners and Samantha Sabor hit a hard grounder to third, securing the first run of the game, 1-0.
The Purple Knights tallied two runs in each of the next three innings off of five hits extending its lead to seven, 7-0.
Stonehill left two on base in the bottom of the third inning as Caroline Casey walked and Taylor Whaley reached on a fielder's choice, as the Purple Knights retired the side with back-to-back ground outs. Late in the game, the Skyhawks saw its first hit as Julia Hartman singled with one out and Bridgeport held up Stonehill before any damage was done holding on for its second shutout of the season.
Game 2: Stonehill 1 – Molloy 0
Stonehill tallied the first hit of the game in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Carly Rennie reached on a fielder's choice and stole second with Julia Hartman up to bat. Julia singled up the middle advancing to second on the throw to bring home Rennie from second for a 1-0 lead.
Casey registered one of the Skyhawks five hits in the second game
Katherine Rayner kept the Lions off the bases in the bottom of the first inning, before the Skyhawks threatened by getting two runners on base as Molloy got three-straight outs to end the half frame. The Lions' Alex Burns registered the first hit for Molloy with a single up the middle stranding her on base with a strike out and a ground out.
In the bottom of the fourth, Molloy put two runners on base with a walk and a single but Stonehill's defense halted the Lions from scoring, leaving the two on base.
Stonehill (3-8) looks to host Bentley University for its first Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader of the season on Wednesday, March 20 with a first pitch slated for 3:00 p.m. on Fr. Gartland Field.
