Pairings Set For Northeast-10 Softball Championship

Easton, Mass. - Stonehill will open play in the postseason for the first time since 1996 when the Skyhawks face Bryant on Saturday in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Softball Championship it was announced after pairing were set by the Conference office on Thursday evening.

No. 7 Stonehill will square off with No. 2 Bryant beginning at 9 a.m. in Syracuse N.Y.

LeMoyne, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, earned the right to host the championship after breezing through the Northeast-10 Conference schedule, finishing 27-1 in league play and are 40-8 overall. The Dolphins will face 8 th-seeded St. Rose, who earned their way in after LeMoyne swept Bentley on the last day of the regular season.

The winner of Stonehill-Bryant will face the winner of St. Anselm-Southern Connecticut, a pair of teams the Skyhawks split doubleheaders with.

Because the weather played a factor in the final days of the season, the tournament format has been altered for this year's event. Rather than a double elimination, the championship will be single elimination on Saturday and the championship series will be a best of three played on Sunday. The winner of that series will earn the Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The Skyhawks dropped both of their games with the Bulldogs this season, falling 5-0 in the first and 8-7 in the nightcap. Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.), however, hit .667 against Bryant in the two contests, collecting four hits and two RBI.

The key for Stonehill will be their ability to get to Bryant's starting pitching. Janine Enos, who led the Northeast-10 in wins (13) and ERA (1.29), held the Skyhawks to five hits and no runs, while striking out eight in a win earlier this season.

Offense for Stonehill hasn't been a problem, as the Skyhawks rank in the top five in nine different categories and have one of the Conference's most feared hitters in junior Courtney Young (Danvers, Mass.). Young, who is tied for second in the Conference in homeruns (7), leads Stonehill in batting (.373), slugging (.653), on-base percentage (.448), RBI (32), doubles (10), total bases (77), walks (16) and is second on the squad with nine sacrifice bunts.
