EASTON, Mass.-- Senior Vikki Guido (Winchester, Mass.) and sophomore Stacey Lajoie (Gardner, Mass.) each collected five hits as UMass Lowell swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader from Stonehill by identical 5-2 scores Thursday afternoon at Gartland Field.
The visiting River Hawks (6-8, 2-0 Northeast-10) jumped out to a 5-0 fourth inning lead in the opener in rapping out 12 hits, as Guido and fellow seniors Melissa Hanafin (Burlington, Mass.) and Josselyn Mroz (Salisbury, Mass.), along with junior Jachael Guanci (Everett, Mass.) and freshman Heather Ross (Waltham, Mass.), each drove in a run. The host Skyhawks (1-11, 0-2 Northeast-10) got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the fourth to account for the final score on an RBI groundout by junior Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) and a steal of home by sophomore Courtney Young (Danvers, Mass.), but Stonehill got no closer as River Hawk senior Kristen Mahoney (Burlington, Mass.) scattered three hits and fanned four to improve to 3-2 on the season. Sophomore Katie Mottau (Woonsocket, R.I.) allowed nine hits and five hits over the first four innings for the Skyhawks in falling to 1-4 on the spring.
UMass Lowell plated a pair of single runs in the first and third frames of the nightcap on an RBI single by Lajoie and a run-scoring triple by Guanci, but Stonehill evened matters with single runs of its own in the fourth and fifth innings when Young stole home for the second time on the day and sophomore Yesenia Marrero (Brockton, Mass.) collected an RBI single. The River Hawks pushed across three runs with two outs in the decisive sixth inning, as a two-run double by junior Laurie Tanguay (Lowell, Mass.), coupled with a Lajoie RBI single, accounted for the final score.
Guido and Lajoie each had three hits in the nightcap triumph for UMass Lowell, which collected 11 hits in the contest in support of freshman Lindsay Farmer (Kingston, N.H.), who went the distance in allowing five hits to improve to 3-4 on the mound. Young, junior Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y.), sophomore Kate Brides (West Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman Kristen Clark (Brockton, Mass.) joined Marrero with hits in the nightcap for Stonehill, as junior Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) suffered the loss on the mound in relief of freshman Kait Mendall (Middleboro, Mass.), who pitched three innings of relief in the opener and the first two frames of the nightcap.
Stonehill heads to Pleasantville, N.Y. on Sunday afternoon to take on Pace in a Northeast-10 doubleheader that begins at Noon, while UMass Lowell heads to New Haven, Conn. on Saturday afternoon to take on Southern Connecticut in a Northeast-10 twinbill at Noon.
