EASTON, Mass.-- Junior Christine Grenache (Leominster, Mass.) cracked a two-run homer to lead a 13-hit attack as Stonehill gained a split of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader with Saint Rose by posting a 9-1 nightcap victory in contests played Sunday afternoon at Gartland Field, as the Golden Knights won the opener by a 7-5 final.

The host Chieftains (8-17, 7-9 Northeast-10) jumped out to a 4-0 third inning lead in the nightcap on the strength of a two-run single by freshman Jamie Ludwig (Trumbull, Conn.) and RBI singles by sophomore Kristen Demick (East Hampton, Conn.) and freshman Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) and ended the contest in the fifth via the eight-run rule with three more tallies after plating two in the fourth. Flanagan?s second RBI single, coupled with freshman Gina Vivona?s (Seaford, N.Y.) sacrifice fly, accounted for the two Stonehill fourth inning runs, while Grenache?s two-run blast (her second of the year) and an RBI double by freshman Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y.) closed out the scoring.

Grenache, Flanagan, Demick and senior Nicole Pichette (Exeter, R.I.) each had two hits in the second game triumph for Stonehill, as freshman Danielle Mason (Salisbury, Mass.) allowed just two hits and an unearned run over five innings of work to pick up her second victory of the season. Junior Marlo Daniels (Troy, N.Y.) accounted for the lone run in the nightcap for the visiting Golden Knights (5-19, 2-12 Northeast-10) with a fourth-inning double, as freshman Melissa Salisbury (Schaghticoke, N.Y.) took the setback on the mound for Saint Rose, allowing seven hits and five runs in 3 2/3 innings.

Saint Rose jumped out to a 5-0 second inning lead in the opener, as the visitors took advantage of a wild pitch and three passed balls to go with a bases-loaded walk to freshman Danielle Encizo (Bayshore, N.Y.) and an RBI single by freshman Kristen Calahan (Lagrange, N.Y.) to plate their runs. The Golden Knights scored single runs in the fourth and sixth frames, respectively, on RBI singles by Daniels and senior Kimberly Frisbee (Colonie, N.Y.) to take a 7-1 lead, but Stonehill closed to within 7-4 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Jaime Ippolito (Chelsea, Mass.) and a run-scoring groundout by Pichette that was sandwiched between a wild pitch. The Chieftains closed to within 7-5 in their final at-bat on an RBI double by freshman Lauren Rappoli (Wilmington, Mass.), but left the bases loaded to end the contest.

Calahan went 4-for-4 to lead a 10-hit Saint Rose attack in the opener, as she helped her own cause at the plate as well as on the mound, scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs while striking out seven to pick up her third win of the season for the Golden Knights. Ludwig collected two of Stonehill?s seven hits in the opener, as Vivona allowed just one hit but walked five in 1 2/3 innings of work to suffer the setback on the mound for the Chieftains.

Stonehill travels to Briarcliff, N.Y. on Monday afternoon for a Northeast-10 doubleheader with Pace that begins at 3:00 p.m., while Saint Rose hosts Saint Anselm in a Northeast-10 twinbill on Monday afternoon in Rotterdam, N.Y. that begins at 5:00 p.m.
