March 31, 1981 - After a 24-5 season the year prior, Stonehill Baseball received top honors in the preseason coaches' poll.  The College's four first-place votes made them the favorites to capture the first-ever Northeast-7 Conference Championship.  However, Stonehill finished fifth with a 15-18 record.

Not many coaches in the country can boast of the accolades that Karen Boen has put on her resume since arriving at Stonehill a decade ago. Now in her tenth season at the College, Boen has brought the men's and women's cross country and track and field programs to national prominence, collecting countless conference, regional and national awards along the way. Under her tutelage, seven men and women have gone on to earn All-America honors in cross country and another 14 in men's and women's track and field. She has collected a combined 10 Northeast-10 Coach of the Year Awards and eight more NCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year Awards.

Under Boen's watch, the women's cross country team has reached national acclaim while establishing itself as one of the elite programs in the country. Now in her ninth season mentoring the Skyhawks, she has led them to seven Northeast-10 Championships. Each year in which Stonehill claimed the Northeast-10 title, they went on to earn the NCAA Northeast Regional titles as well and advance to the NCAA Championship.

She also has won seven Northeast-10 and NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year awards, giving her more conference coach of the year awards than anyone in the history of Northeast-10 cross country.

She has developed three All-Americans in the sport and over 30 all-conference and all-region honorees. During the 2003 season Stonehill had four runners earn first-team all-conference honors and turn in a 10th place finish at the NCAA Championship - the program's best ever.

Boen's teams have excelled in the classroom as well, making eight straight appearances on the NCAA Division II All-Academic Team.

In seven seasons at the helm of the men's program, Boen has enjoyed nearly as much success as she did on the women's side. She has cultivated four All-Americans and led Stonehill to three Northeast-10 Championships (2004, 2005 and 2007) and two NCAA Northeast Regional titles (2005 and 2007). Her coaching peers recognized her as the NCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year following Stonehill's two regional titles.

Stonehill has finished no lower than 18th at the NCAA Championships in their five appearances including a program best tenth place finish in 2006.

Her ability to consistently develop runners was never more evident in a stretch from 2003-2006, where four different runners earned All-America recognition.

Stonehill has been as effective in the classroom as they have been out on the trails with the men earning eight straight spots on the NCAA Division II All-Academic Team.

Boen also serves as the head men's and women's track and field coach and those teams have also reaped the benefits of her expertise. Nearly every single school record has been rewritten since her arrival and 13 student-athletes have collected All-America honors.

The men's program has truly taken off with Boen at the helm, turning in back-to-back second place finishes at the Northeast-10 Indoor Championships (2007 and 2008) and three top-10 finishes at the New England Championships.

Along the way records have fallen and All-New England and All-America honors have been won. On the men's side, the All-America honors started rolling in during the 2006 outdoor season with a 1,500 meter honoree. The indoor season continued the exploits with the Skyhawks' Distance Medley quartet earning the honor in back-to-back years (2007 and 2008). In addition to the DMR, two others were named All-America - one in the 60 meter dash and the other in the Indoor Mile in 2007.

2008 proved to be just as fruitful for the Stonehill men, with the second DMR team and another Indoor Mile selection each picking up All-America nods. But the highlight of the year was the season-long performance of Keith Gill. He held the nation's fastest time in the mile for an extended period, won the College's first New England Championship (1,000 meters) and was named the 2008 USTFCCA Male Indoor Athlete of the Year.

The women's track and field program has continued to blossom under Boen's direction. She was named 2004 Northeast-10 Women's Indoor Coach of the Year after Stonehill finished second at the Northeast-10 Championship and collected NCAA Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 2004-2005 - a record-breaking season in which Stonehill turned in their best finish at both the Northeast-10 Championship and New England Championship.

Boen also played an integral role in two key events hosted by Stonehill. In 2006, Stonehill hosted the NCAA Division II Championships at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston, Massachusetts and in April of 2008 the College hosted its first ever Track and Field event, the Skyhawk Invitational.

A 1979 graduate of Bridgewater (Mass.) State College with a degree in exercise physiology, Boen and her husband Carl, reside in Stoughton. The couple has three daughters Courtney, a 2006 graduate of Tufts University, Colleen, a 2008 graduate of Villanova and Molly (15).
